James E. "Buddy" Caldwell, Sr., age 78, of 283 Boggs Street, Princeton, W.Va., formerly of Switchback, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Sunday night (May 31, 2009) at his residence after a long illness. Born July 5, 1930 in Switchback, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ellis Caldwell and Pebble Allen Caldwell. He was affiliated with the Methodist faith. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marines, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired coal miner from Cannelton Coal Company at Superior, W.Va. with 33 years of service. He was a former constable in McDowell County for four years. He was a resident of Switchback most of his life and had resided at 283 Boggs Street, Princeton, for the past 23 years. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Shelby Caldwell; a grandson, James Caldwell, III; three sisters, Doris, Evelyn Ward, and Muriel Quesenberry.He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Brenda Blankenship Caldwell of the home; three daughters, Virgie Arlene Yates of Lerona, W.Va., Debora Ann Lafferty and husband Steven of Switchback, W.Va., Shirley Marie Blankenship and husband Tim of Lashmeet, W.Va.; two sons, James E. Caldwell, Jr. and wife Terry of Lerona, W.Va., Wendell Lee Caldwell and wife Becky of Henderson, Ky.; two stepchildren, Tammy Marie Myers of Monetta, Va., Shanna Gail Phipps of Athens, W.Va.; a son-in-law, Bernie Phipps of Pocahontas, Va.; one brother, Kenneth Caldwell and wife Marie of Henderson, Ky.; grandchildren, Rachel Yates, Steven Lafferty, Jr., Josh and Derrick Caldwell, Justin and Heather Caldwell, Tabitha Caldwell, and Jett Caldwell.; four stepgrandchildren, Nicholas Curtis Myers, Jeremiah Phipps, Breanna Phipps, and Bethany Phipps; six great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Sandy.Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Bluewell, W.Va. with the Rev. Olen Robertson officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council and the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard. Burial will follow in the cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.
