Huh Joy in Adversity?

When defeat seems inevitable and the battle unavoidable, praise Jesus!

In his book Praise, M. Caruthers tells of a soldier who arrived in Vietnam in tears. He had just received a letter from his wife saying she was divorcing him. He was persuaded to sit in the middle of a circle of believing soldiers and start thanking God. The soldier thought this was crazy. The very next morning however, he received a telegram from his wife that she wanted his forgiveness for that letter; she did not want to divorce him but would wait for his return home.

In times like these, in all our circumstances, we give thanks to God and fix our eyes on Jesus. "Fix" means we let nothing distract our attention from him. That is how we should be looking to Jesus. Hebrews 12:2 says, Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Looking to Jesus is looking to where abundant life and victory lie. That is why we can always rejoice and sing. The work is finished by Christ for us. We know we have an eternity of joy ahead of us. No eye has seen nor ear heard what God has prepared for those who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9). James writes, Those who have reason to be thankful should continually sing praises to the Lord (James 5:13). Paul says in Colossians 3:16, Sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

Thanksgiving is authorized before we see the miracle!

Amen! From "Christians in Commerce" daily devotional 10/25/11

I Cor. 2:9 - “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.
