La Mesa Outpost "Pizza Feed"

I will try to post a couple of pictures from the La Mesa Outpost's Pizza Feeds at the Navy Medical Center San Diego Medical Hold Platoon. It is great to see the cross-generational contact and carring.

Good job, I just wanted to see how all this works. How did you guys line this all up. I would like to do something like it here, but have no idea how or how....

Re: Coos Bay 2005

Sparky:

I made an initial phone call to the Public Affairs Officer at Navy Medical Center, San Diego (NMCSD) (known to us Veet-Nam era guys as Balboa Hospital). That was ignored for about a month and after about two more calls, I received a return call from the Armed Services YMCA Liaison at NMCSD. I initially offerred to take a couple of Medical Hold Platoon Marines to dinner. They set me up with a couple of their semi-staff guys to check me out. After I paid for dinner I realized that for not much more, I could feed the entire Platoon. I called the YMCA contact and pitched my idea, and she thought it would be great. I ran it past a few kindred souls and they all thought it was great. Next thing I knew we had received donations to cover the costs and set up the logistics to bring pizzas, salads, sodas, home made deserts (from our host Church's Military Wives Ministry) and a few veterans and helpers.

The ground rules from YMCA were "no proselytizing" which we have stuck to very rigidly. But many of us wear Point Man "colors" and I put up a poster with the names of those who have contributed so the attendees know we are Christians and infer that we are serving them in His Name.

Let me know if you want to discuss further.

Re: Coos Bay 2005

Don: Are these troopers war wounded, or Stateside casualties?
....Either way, makes me happy that YeOlde guys stepped up and gave the Young'uns a friendly touch...and maybe a little old Jarhead love too...I hope the day made their week...

BuckStripes:

Both. It varies month-to-month. In March, the two most serious casualties were Stateside: one was a motorcycle (e.g. donorcycle) crash with inattentive motorist cutting him off and the other was brain cancer diagnosed while he was in Boot Camp. Sometimes the most serious are OIF grads, like the young lad on the crutches.
