William S. "Bill" Jallen, 82, Sidney, NE (Corpsman)

SIDNEY - William S. "Bill" Jallen, 82, passed away at his home on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13, in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Military Graveside Honors will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Cremation has been held. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. to sign Bill's register book and leave condolences for the family.

Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service, LLC is in charge of Bill's care and funeral arrangements.

Bill was born on Nov. 14, 1930 in Pinewood, Minn. in a little one-room shack to Melvin and Beatrice (Cheney) Jallen. He attended and graduated from school in Bemidji, Minn., 1948. He attended college at Bemidji State and North Dakota State, Mayville, N.D. After school, Bill enlisted in the Navy, Dec. 29, 1950, became a hospital corpsman and worked with the Marines in Korea and Japan. He played pro baseball while being stationed in Japan. Bill was honorably discharged on Oct. 7, 1954. He then met and married, the love of his life, Joyce Elaine DeMers, April 16, 1953 in San Clemente, Calif. During their many years of marriage, they had five wonderful children: two boys, Raymond Lloyd and Willam Sanford, and three girls, Sheila Marie, Iris Elaine and Anne Louise. Bill was the General Manager of DeMers and Sons Grain, Brownson, Neb. After the elevator was closed, he worked for the Sidney Lowe Railroad, Farmers Coop Elevator and then retired in 1987. While working, he supported young people by umpiring for the American Legion Baseball Association, as well as umpiring and playing softball during the summer and bowling in the winter.

After retiring, Bill spent many hours on numerous golf courses, attended auctions and attended school activities for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He became a lifetime member of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), the American Legion, and the Elks. He enjoyed his summertime Thursday afternoons, playing and hanging out with the "guys" at the golf course.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Sidney; sons, Raymond (Margaret) Jallen, Sidney, William (Bill) Jallen, Queen Creek, Ariz.; daughters, Iris (Steve) Olofson, Ogallala, Anne (Dean) Sterling, Sidney; grandchildren, Thomas Deal, Ogallala, Shawn (Tiffany) Jallen, Sidney, Justin Jallen (Erica Johnson), Sidney, John Olofson, Kearney, Jeremy Jallen, Mesa, Ariz., Jayma (Shannon) Smay, Omaha, Chanel Sterling, Lead, S.D.; great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Alex, Sheila, Daniel, Katarina, Brayden, Brittany, Cordel, Ashlynn; sister-in-law, Evelyn Demers of Sunol; aunts, Eunice Winger, Selma Becker both of Bemidji, Minn., numerous extended family members, friends and family dogs.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Beatrice Jallen; brother, CJ Sund; daughter, Sheila M Deal; his parents-in-law, John and Merle DeMers and brothers-in-law, John, Raymond and Donald DeMers.
