Edwin Thomas LaChance Jr., 83, of Titusville, passed from this earth to eternal life Monday, January 26, 2009. Ed was born in Inkster, Michigan, March 12, 1925, the seventh of eight children born to Edwin Thomas Sr. and Ina Bessie LaChance. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, at age 17, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. During World War II he fought in the Pacific, including the invasion at Tarawa. He earned many medals and awards, among which was the Bronze Star, Combat "V", during the Korean War for repeated bravery under fire forward of the front lines, demon strating outstanding leader ship and initiative against the enemy without regard for his own life. He was one of only 15 of his original undermanned company of 195 to survive the campaign unwounded from the wars start through the Battle at Chosin Reservoir. He retired as a First Sergeant after 20 years service. Ed worked at the Cape for McDonnell Douglas- Aerospace, then desiring a simpler life for his family, moved to Arkansas and farmed. They later moved to Michigan, then back to Florida. He accomplished many things and overcame numerous hurdles in his life, always with courage and his wife, Billie, by his side. He was steadfast in the faith, a tender, faithful husband and excellent father. Ed was a hero to his comrades in war, his family, his work associates, and those in need. He consistently offered hope and help to others, putting their needs before his own. He did all these things in a quiet way, without bringing attention to himself. He was a genuine giver from his heart. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Billie and their six children, 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ina Marie Grogitsky and Mary Hall; also numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Their children and families include: Tom (Bonnie) LaChance and four children: Nicole (Troy), Shaina and Colby Propper; Amanda (Garrett), Natalia Welch; Lindsay (Brian), Paisley Giera; Hayley LaChance; Cathy Smith and two children: Sharilyn (Robbie), Katherine, Edith, Liam, Aidan, Ellen Grayson; Ryan (Tori), Aryn Smith; Jeff (Jill) LaChance and two children: Jason LaChance, Melanie (Joey) Purdy; John (Cheryl), Lauren, Ann, Christopher and James LaChance; Ann and two children: Nicandro IV, Maria Iannuccilli; Suzi (Nathan) Young and nine children: Anne Marie (Benjamin), Brendolyn and Galahad Brewer; Caleb, Joshua, Samuel, Heidi, Adam Levi Edwin, Serenity, Arielle and Seth Young. Visitation is Thursday, January 29th, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home, Merritt Island. Services will be held Friday, January 30, at 10 a.m., at Ed and Billie's church home, New Life Christian Fellowship, U.S. 1, Titusville, Pastor (Dr.) Larry Linkous officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Life's Food Pantry for help to needy families as Ed would have desired.
