Clifford R. Craven, 85, of Lee's Summit, MO

Clifford R. Craven of Lee's Summit, Mo., passed away at his home on September 23, 2013, at the age of 85.

He was born October 20, 1927, to Earl and Mary (Moffitt) Craven at Cowgill, MO. He graduated from Cowgill High School in 1945. He served in both the Navy and the Marine Corps. Cliff attended William Jewell College for two years, then transferred to CMSU at Warrensburg, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1950. While at Warrensburg he met Loretta June Bozarth and they were married August 11, 1950. Cliff taught history and coached for two years at J. C. Penney High School in Hamilton, MO. He received a Masters degree in Secondary School Administration from CMSU in 1955. He then took a job in Lee's Summit as a P. E. teacher and coached football, basketball, and track at Lee's Summit Junior High. In 1962 he taught sixth grade at Westview Elementary School in Lee's Summit and in 1963 was Principal at Greenwood Elementary School in Lee's Summit. Cliff then transferred to the Independence School District in 1964 and was Principal at Oldham Elementary School. He opened William Southern Elementary School in1966 and was Principal at both schools for the rest of that year. He remained at William Southern School for eighteen years.

He retired in 1984 after 32 years in public education. Cliff became co-owner of Cliff and Ric's Summit Automotive in Lee's Summit around 1970. After retiring from education he worked there until 1998. Cliff was a life-long member of the Community of Christ and served as Pastor of the Lee's Summit congregation for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta, of 63 years, a daughter, Diane Riffie, a son, Ron Craven, grandsons John Hansen and wife Christy, Aaron Riffie and wife Kyndal, great-grandsons Caleb Hansen and Caz Riffie, brothers Harold Craven of Warrensburg and Kenneth Craven of Liberty, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Genevieve Smith.

A memorial service will be held at the Lee's Summit Community of Christ, 1101 NE Independence Avenue, Lee's Summit, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, with visitation following.

Memorial contributions may be made to Outreach International or Lee's Summit Community of Christ scholarship fund.
