Shirley J. Lemons, 90, of Whiting, NJ

Shirley J. Lemons, 90, of Whiting, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

She was a supervisor years ago for Data Scope Corp in Oakland, NJ retiring in 1990. She was a homemaker most of her life. She was most proud of having been a Veteran and Sgt. in the United States Marine Corps where she served during World War II as a dispatcher, truck driver and a non-commissioned officer acting as liaison officer. She was born in Bement, Ill. In 1922, attended school in Ohio, then worked as an inspector for Essex Wire and General Electric in Ft. Wayne, Ind. After the war and marrying her husband, the late Frank of 59 years in 2004, in Hollywood, California, they returned home to their home in Kentucky, until he suffered a stroke and they relocated to Cedar Glen lakes in 1995.

Shirley was a member of the National Women Marines Association and the American Legion Post 502, a second past commander of the American Legion Post 502, and she was a former Girl Scout Leader. For many years she knitted pairs of mittens and scarfs for Kevin's Kids.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Monica of New Hampshire, and Carol of New Jersey, along with 3 sons, Gregory of Kentucky, Kent of Florida, and Michael of NY; 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Friends may call on Thursday from 3-7pm at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 115 Lacey Rd., Whiting, NJ 08759. Funeral Services will be at 6 pm.

Committal and Military Honors will take place on Friday, September 20, 2013 at 9:30am from the Brig Gen Wm C Doyle NJ Veterans Cemetery, Provinceline Rd., Arneytown.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request considering a donation to Holy Redeemer Hospice, 1228 Rt 37, West, Toms River, NJ 08755.
