Bertrand "Bert" Applebaum, 75, Boynton Beach, FL

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Bertrand Applebaum, 75, of Boynton Beach, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, after a brief illness.

Born and raised in Malden, Mass., and a former resident of Manchester, N.H., Bert attended Northeastern University and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He never missed the opportunity to greet a fellow Marine with "Semper Fi."

Bert met Gail, the love of his life, at Fishermen's Beach in Swampscott, Mass. Engaged just 27 days later, they were each other's best friend and were happily married for nearly 53 years. He was a former partner of Rooks' and Pariseau's, a chain of ladies' apparel stores, for over 30 years prior to closing the business and moving to Florida. Bert and Gail spent the last 20 years operating Simply Swimwear at flea markets in Delray Beach and Stuart.

Easy to engage and a great storyteller, Bert was known for his wonderful sense of humor, thoughtful nature and outgoing personality. He also cared deeply about helping others and donated to as many charities as possible. An avid golfer, Bert was a long-standing member of the Manchester, N.H., Country Club, where he achieved a rare hole-in-one. He enjoyed all sports, travel (especially cruises), the beach and pool, playing cards, music and live theater, but his favorite pastime by far, was spending time with his family and friends. In fact, if someone was a friend of his children, they unconditionally became a friend of Bert. He loved to laugh and his beautiful smile would light up a room. He will be deeply missed.

Bert was the beloved husband of Gail B. (Schneider) Applebaum, cherished father of Scott and Ilisa Applebaum of Peabody, Mass., Robyn (Applebaum) and Michael DeNorscia of Marlborough, Mass., and Joel and Bette Applebaum of Oklahoma City. He was the adored grandfather of Lia and Benjamin Applebaum, Jessica, Justin and Jordan DeNorscia, and Jennah and Justin Applebaum; loving brother-in-law of Arlene (and the late Melvin) Pierce and Sandra and James Belson. He is also survived by several dear nieces, nephews and friends.

Bert was predeceased by his parents, Jennie and Philip Applebaum; his brother, Stephen; and infant son, Bruce.

Remembrances may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Heart Association or a charity of one's choice .
