It is Painful, It is Joyful©

It is painful to see all that is wrong and have no control over such events, but it is joyful to see what is right and know you are part of it and that God and you, together, control what is right.

Expectations©

Expectations of others provide some of life's most difficult challenges. When we remember that we do for others, without expectation of anything in return, we are not disappointed. It is then a blessing and joy, when others do for us. People both disappoint and bless us... God is the only source of consistent blessings....

Remembering all our current Military and Veterans of all eras...rgs

Together we are Americans

My eyes are filled and overflow for my brother. Though from different clans, we are together in spirit and in pride and have shared the sacred banner and uniform of freedom, for those of past, we did and do today for all those who will follow in the future.

Holding on and letting go©

Holding on and letting go are two of the most strenuous exercises we do in life ... in each case God is the One who knows what we must do and when we must do it...
It is up to us to ask Him what and when...

I cannot blame God for anything untoward in my life or in the lives of others, but I certainly can credit Him for the good in all our lives.

Through this act, makes for a better life.

He will provide©

If we look only for blame, we find only blame.

If we search for solutions, He provides them.

The questions are important to ask,

but not for us to continue to ask.

The answers are always where He placed them for us.

Reach out your hands with palms upward, in praise and supplication.

He will provide, as He has promised, He will provide.

When I pray for others©

When I pray for others I pay special heed to those, who though they may themselves suffer greatly, yet they have and maintain great faith and gratitude and are an inspiration to me and to others. I am always deeply enheartened by those who, in spite of personal pain and fear, are able to remember God's promises and gifts.

For them, I ask God to give something extra.

More on Miracles©

God indeed is behind many miracles we see each day but maybe do not recognize them as such.

Today, I place little or no stake in coincidence, for I have found reason and cause to be connected, often in the hands of God.

He works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform….what a wonderful God we have….

Promise©

I am not one of the biblical 3 wise men, but I noticed they searched for that power greater than self. I suspect they knew something. There is a bright promise in that star they followed. It shines for all of us if we choose to follow it to its source.

Many Things Have Changed©)

Including myself, many things have changed through the years, my friend, many lessons have been learned, and many lessons remain, I've yet to learn...

I see all around me, the things we once viewed as human character defects and today are commonplace behaviors; greed, power hunger, selfishness, excess and abuse...

Yet, in spite all that is wrong, in my eyes, I see all the gifts God has provided us with and His Word is solid and remains, unchanged and always true.

For this I am ever grateful.

God gave us each other,

when we need to know,
there is someone who cares.

find, tenfold it returns.....

Choices & Responsibility©

Choices are a God given gift. We can do only what we have chosen to do...others must decide for themselves, with ultimately the choice made becoming the responsibility of the one making the choice. Responsibility is the more difficult part, for we all must live with our choices long after they have been made....

Our Protectors, Our Veterans©

The lives of some known and many not, have touched us. There's little difference than found in any other war, with caskets holding their bodies, now come home they to rest. They were our protectors, it is their duty they have done, and they did their best, and again, lives of some known and many not, have touched us. How many times has the “story of stories” been repeated, by millions of families throughout the ages since first spoken? “He gave His only Begotten Son”, rings on and on. May that sacrifice never be forgotten. Likewise, millions of other sons and daughters have been given, as our Protectors, in their service; to God, to country, to family, to community. They, too, gave up their begotten children, their loved ones, for us, for all of us, to never be forgotten. As was His sacrifice, is theirs, our protectors, for the ever living hope of futures bright, we join in humble gratitude, to honor and to comfort all who need. May our protectors, our veterans, never be forgotten.
In addition to the horrors and ravages of war itself, during each era of our protectors, our veterans, have had to face such issues as we have seen; issues such as radiation, psychedelics, agent orange, chemicals, biological agents and unproven experimental vaccines. It is my belief that it is our ultimate responsibility to do what we can to minimize these types of issues that were unnecessary to have occurred in the first place. We owe our protectors this, too, for all current and future generations. If we do not protect our protectors, our veterans, who indeed, will protect them?
The health and well being issues of our protectors, our veterans of all eras and of the reserves, guards, and active duty military of today are real. This should be our focus, this should be our purpose, this should be our commitment, and this is what we owe to our protectors, our veterans.
If we do not protect our protectors, our veterans, who indeed will protect us?

One Veteran’s Pledge©

When it was my time, I served. My sons served, because I shared with them the value and meaning of serving. I wear the badge of doing the right thing, but also the pain of sending my sons into harms way. Today I can justify that it still is right, but am troubled over the pain my son has and the pain of so many other sons and daughters and the pain of their loved ones, who, like myself, sent them off to war. So, today, I proudly serve our Veterans in the best ways I can. I am an activist for Veterans issues, I honor our standing military and I help with health and well being issues of our Veterans of all Era’s and for the active duty military of today. This is the focus, this is our purpose, this is what we owe to our Veterans.

I need to remember Hope and Laughter and Hope©

I also have to remember there is little original in this life to be claimed, even then, origination is a gift from God, and on loan to us.

Another thing I need remember is about opinions; it's OK to have opinions, but not to have opinions about other folks opinions.

And most importantly I need to remember we must take time for some silliness, for humor is required in life.

And of course, I need to remember Hope and Laughter and Hope

The Soul©

I have looked into the dulled eyes of imbeciles, morons and those with downs and have seen recognizable signs of a kindly soul and spirit, conversely, I have looked into the eyes of men of sparkling brilliance and found no signs of a soul or kindly spirit. I think we all have a soul, some just hide it better than others..... The soul, I think, is a transparency of our Creator's image, issued to each of us, the transparency contains all the ingredients to provide us with what we spiritually require, leaving it up to us to identify and use those ingredients in such a way, as to develop the individual's finished soul product....

I have time for you friend, busy, yes, but never too busy for a friend who may need me. God gave us friends so we did not have to be alone, even when we know we are never alone, for He is with us always, He uses friends to reinforce that with us.

I'm no great person, only another soul trying to be the best I can with what I have. I do little by myself, for without God and trust in His love and omnipotence I am lost in self, and that is a very dangerous place for me to be. Better I give it over to Him, and let Him guide me..

Now, what is it, you wish to say, dear friend?

Trust and Respect©

It is important, I have learned in the most painful of ways, to never do anything or treat anyone, in such a manner that it destroys the trust and respect of the relationship and of each other. As devastating it is to one another, it destroys even worse the trust and respect for self. When that occurs, all that one has believed and held in value is eroded into meaninglessness and empty occupying of space. Forgiveness by others is possible but difficult to obtain. Forgiveness of self may never come, leaving only misery, doubt, and lonely emptiness.

We need to stay upon our soapboxes

Our young and promising and bright and strong have their necks and butts on the line and are sacrificing all they have, for each and every one of us. To allow the enemy, foreign or domestic, in any form, under any guise, to undermine and endanger those young men and women in service is to turn our backs on all that we hold proudly; our history, our flag, our country, our military, our veterans, and for all of what we stand.

Each unique and special quality of the individual is best enhanced when joined in common cause with others as unique and special in their own right. Consider each as a patch in the quilt of humanity. Reminders of our responsibility of forgiving and being forgiven©

I have found in my life, the forgiveness most difficult, is the forgiveness of self. I attribute it to my ego and self-centered nature..

I must get tough with myself over resistance to self-forgiving, for it is the ultimate in arrogance, to not forgive myself, even after God and others have forgiven me....

In the Lord's Prayer, it says..."deliver us from evil", which I frequently replace with "deliver us from ego", as it reminds me that the worst evils in my personal life were frequently empowered by my ego...brought upon myself, allowing evil to control and consume....through blocking of my ability to be forgiven, to forgive others, and to forgive myself.

Today, I am grateful for the forgiveness of God, of my fellow man, and of myself...

Indeed, a task of proportions many do not know, to serve others with only the knowledge that you do your best, thankless more often than not, but for the times of seeing a process improved, a better way found, or a family helped to the point they now help themselves and others, all is worth the while….. it is always right to work each today, always with understanding of the past, always to help create for the better future…..for all.

Being a Spouse and Parent©

It seems we can prepare, by education or otherwise, for most in life, but for the most important jobs of being a good spouse and parent, we are least prepared and rely upon much on the job training and trial and error....

in those instances, we can do but the best job we can do.....

...of these things.....the most important to remember:

it’s not the destination, but the journey, that is most important....

...making the most, the best, of each and every possible moment spent with those we love.....

....no scream is louder than a spirit in agony.....

....no whisper is more silent than a prayer of gratitude...

Before all else.............©

Before all else, as a Christian, I believe in God...............

A few years ago, a Muslim friend inquired of my faith, as a Christian, what was it I believed... here is what I wrote...I learned much about myself and my spirituality through writing the reply.....

"Before all else, as a Christian, I believe in God, no matter by what name one chooses to call him.

Yes, I refer to myself as a Christian, since that is my background. I strongly believe in the principles lived and taught by Jesus the Christ, and am respectful of the pain, sacrifice and persecution suffered by Jesus the Man...

I am not a traditional Christian, in that I do not affiliate with any sect or denomination. That is by choice. I have experienced many of the Christian groups, but do not find my solace and exultation in organizations, buildings or the physical trappings, of any religious faith.

I am a simple man, as I speak directly to God each day, more as speaking with an older brother. In my prayers, I tell Him of my gratitude for all I receive, I admit my human frailties to Him and ask for His guidance in all things, I ask for little for myself, but to be in thought and purpose with His wishes, to help others in need, as I might. I beg His forgiveness, when I fall short of being the man He wishes me to be.

Through the years, I have been greatly blessed to meet and know people of many faiths and religions, I have become a better person, through learning from each of them, not from rigid dogma or ritual, but from the gentleness and honesty of their spirits, for it is not one religion or another that I find so important, it is spirituality. In my humble opinion and belief, it is in and through the spirit, we are one with our God and Creator and Provider. I think it is also true of our spiritual oneness with each other, no matter our religion or nationality. God is first, all other follows...."

A Nurse Is More©

A Nurse is more, Why?
Though nobody, can say why, for sure,

Nurse's desire, for service, is pure. Not for themselves, it has to be for others.

A life dedicated, to their sisters and their brothers.

A Nurse is more, How?
Through reserves, of strength, care and love,
Nurses take their lead, from the power above.
Above and beyond, their duty comes first.
Their patient's needs paramount, before even hunger and thirst.

A Nurse is more, When?
When we need them the most, at our times of ill,
Nurses come through, with their care and goodwill.
When we feel we can't go on, and wish, to give up the ghost.
That's when our Nurses, give it their most.

A Nurse is more, Where?
In the hospital, the battlefield, the clinic, school, home or hospice,
Nurses are there, in the ER, the OR, the workplace, and medical office.
Where we are, to go for our care, thankfully, we find Nurses there.
Aging, sick, fearful, weary, we turn to Nurses, and know they care.

A Nurse is more,
A Nurse is more, much more than all we've said, or all we can say,
other than, to acknowledge the Nurses, who so brighten our day.
In gratitude, we thank Nurses, their willingness to serve, we find so appealing,
bringing to us, their comfort, wisdom, compassion and healing.

Perspective, dear friend, is what is gravely lacking in our society,

Only with contrasts do we find the perspectives that put all else into proper focus.

Without loss, would gratitude for what we have be the same?

Without pain, how would we know joy?

Without grief, how would we know happiness?

Without evil, how would we recognize good?

Without challenge, how sweet would the victory be?

As the gap widens and the schisms split further and further, those who ignore God will learn to fear Him greatly. Religion and Spirituality

It has been said that Religion and Spirituality are not necessarily one in the same...

For many, religion is something they profess, a pre-set structure of rules and rituals, a body of people, an organization, a group in which someone belongs, a standard to follow, a pursuit of excellence and perfection.

In many religions, the ultimate goal, called by many names, is a greater reward in a heavenly place when life, as we know it, reaches its earthly end.

Spirituality, to many, is a state of being, of understanding, of discernment, of empathy, of compassion, of gratitude, of peaceful resolve, of ultimate relief through an exchange of earthly burdens for loving, pure and selfless realization and effortless sense of presence with the ultimate highest power.

In our circle of friends, it is often stated that religion is for those of us busily preparing for Heaven. And spirituality is for those of us who have been to Hell and wish never again to return.

-doesn’t require a 39 cent stamp or a silly card
-always can give one away without blowing the budget
-giving them is as good as getting them
-always suitable for those you know or total strangers
-it can be repeated without wearing it out

Keep Praying….©

Recently a clergyman of some distinction was praying to God,

about all the problems of the world...

The clergyman asked of God,

“Why don't you just "Smoke Them"?”

There came a brief pause,

then God responded;

"I don't smoke"!

Keep praying, it confuses Satan

The Choice is Ours.. ©

Whether one believes in a Deity or not, it is reasonably easy to concede there is some higher power, something greater than self. Whatever one's perception, and that may be a sunrise or sunset, flowers, an architectural, musical or artistic masterpiece, or a God of one's own choice, that perception is justifiable and OK for all of them.

The perceived goodness or evil of a human being, is subjective to other's standards of life, the choices made during that life and the impact of those choices upon others govern both perception and reality. We all are indeed capable of altruism or total selfishness, capable also of a life dedicated to the improvement of their fellow humans or the pain and destruction of them.

Choice, right or wrong, and the freedom to do so, is what differentiates us from the lowest forms of life. Belief in something, faith in that belief and choices made through
that faith set us aside, from all others in the evolution chain.

It Takes What it Takes©

At times through our lives, we have had to do the impossible.

We did it, generally for others, for parents, for spouses, for children, for employers.

Somehow, we reached deep within, to a reserve of strength, that even amazed us we possessed such.

We made selfless sacrifices.

We gave when we thought we could give no more.

So, why is it we find it so hard to do the same for ourselves?

Perhaps we feel that we do not deserve it.

Perhaps we feel we are being selfish, to do something for ourselves.

Perhaps we do not any longer value ourselves.

Or perhaps it is difficult, to think of self-altogether.

That same reserve is still within us.

That same strength is ours, for the asking.

That same spirit, to persevere, is available.

That same higher power, that made all possible before, is still there for us today.

In all the other years and all the other circumstances, for others, It took what it took.

Today, for us,

It Takes What It Takes.

Richard G. Shuster, A Biographic Glimpse

A rambling poet of sorts, a lover of this topsy-turvey representative democratic-republic, a proud veteran and father of veterans, a fiercely protective constitutional conservative, and a rapidly seasoning citizen; looking to leave behind a few ramblings that might make some difference to one or more souls who are hopeful for and willing to work for a better future for all our children and children's children and appreciate our history and the gifts and miracles God has and does provide.

Loving and lovely is an inside job, inside each of us...when you feel it is not so or you are doing without love, look inwardly to that place where all of us who love you are waiting there for you. Be at peace my friend...... ©

It always seems more comfortable to stir-up somebody else's ashes, my friend:-)

Resentments in all forms and self-delusions of being able to fix or protect another from anything seem to need to be balanced-out with acceptance through understanding and forgiveness, beginning, first, with ourselves.. and then with others around us...we must eliminate the ego-centric nature we have cultivated and replace it with a love-centered nature..

In a history of hard being better in many ways, we often find not having to battle the windmills of our past, leaves us wondering what we should be battling..letting go and letting be seem foreign to us, yet, if we do not, we do not progress....a dichotomy? perhaps, but one that provides growth through illumination not the damnation of darkness and despair...

His Emissaries©

It seems especially challenging not to try to make things "all better", when we deal with loved ones, with similar "isms" to our own....

No matter how much we love them, no matter how much we care, no matter how much it hurts, to see them following our old paths, often the only things we can do is be the best example we can be and be available when they find it within themselves, to reach out for help.

Today, we need but ask our Higher Power, to be our guide, to help those who suffer and use us as His Emissaries, if it be His Will......

I hope and pray that your day goes well and that God answers all of your needs, and perhaps even throws in a want or two.

I Have Walked in the Shadows©

I have walked in the shadows, shadows that blocked the sun’s rays and kept me a prisoner in the darkness of self, but my hope today is of the selfless variety most of the time. Helping, hoping and praying for others first, staying out of self other than for perspective, contrast and focus. In my life, I have often been blessed greatly, in spite of myself, so it is my desire to share those unearned blessings with others.

Honesty was a hard learned principle for me, opening up my innermost self to others was too, being willing to help others over self, is yet another, accepting a higher power was not an easy chore for me, and self-forgiveness was the largest mountain of all. I spent 40 years of my life practicing to reach the lofty goal of becoming a hopeless alcoholic and the years since practicing how not to be and to find and embrace a new way of life. The life of the practicing alcoholic has many dark and shadowy places that gratefully now have lost their shrouding control and influence. It is good in the sunlight, even better when bringing the sunlight to others.

This sunshine stuff is good for us all……..rgs

Late Bloomer©

Belittled when little… Up came the walls

Felt like I knew nothing, always like, I was nothing at all

I’m what they call, a “Late Bloomer”,

Decided I would show them, to all, I would show

And by then, when convinced I knew it all, again life dealt me a hollowing blow

I’m what they call, a “Late Bloomer”,

Soon bourbon and smoke, covered, shallowly my pain

More rapidly, I withdrew, into my troubled brain.

I’m what they call, a “Late Bloomer”,

-Nothing was left, mind, spirit, body, apart I did fall,

Finally, on the bottom of the bottom, I hit the wall

I’m what they call, a “Late Bloomer”,

-When all seemed hopeless, and life, was at its end,

-You came along, calling me, your friend

I’m what they call, a “Late Bloomer”,

-You picked me up, hand out-stretched, lifting me up

-From nothing then, to now, you have filled up my cup

I’m what they call, a “Late Bloomer”,

-You helped me to see, I was worthwhile and good

-And through it all, beside me, you lovingly stood

I’m what they call, a “Late Bloomer”,

-As you did for me, I now do, for others

-For all of my, late blooming, Sisters and Brothers

Something is happening, to this “Late Bloomer”

-Today, I’m a new man, though later, not sooner,

-No longer am I, called a “Late Bloomer”

No longer am I, called a “Late Bloomer”

You Asked: Were you in Vietnam? ©

Dear Friend;

Lots of stories swarm around the topic of Vietnam, but not all are real positive….suffice it to say, controversy is not new to us.

Yes, thank you for your thanks, you are welcome, we who enlisted and many others that were drafted, did what we could do. And it is heart wrenching, even yet, perhaps even more today, for personal reconciliation with the many souls listed on “The Wall”.

Now to address your question, “Were you in Vietnam?”

I served in the Vietnam Era, but never was in-country, instead doing my service in US Navy Hospitals in San Diego, Guam and Philadelphia…

Back home in Pennsylvania, I got my Draft card November of 1962, when things were ramping up and enlisted in late 1963, with a deferment to 1964, after completing my freshman year at college. I thought it would be a good thing to "do my duty", as my friends were either being drafted or enlisting. I chose Navy and Hospital Corps as specialty.

I finished boot camp and completed my Hospital Corps training, and then was stationed for a short time at San Diego Naval Hospital before getting orders for Guam.

By the time I got to the Naval Hospital in Guam, daily plane loads of battle injured casualties were arriving at military hospitals in Japan, Philippines, Guam and Hawaii. I saw the results of war up-close and personal. Recipients of napalm, mortar shells, land mines, strafing, sniper fire and lots more. Since we rotated within the hospital services, not only did I get to work in all aspects of physical medicine, but also pulled about 6 months working in neuro-psychiatric services, where I got to see the results of war not seen in prosthetic limbs nor colostomy bags.

Following a motorcycle accident on Guam, I spent 6 months hospitalized, 3 months each in Guam and Philadelphia Navy Hospitals, upon which determined my discharge from military service.

I served 2 years and went home, to marry, to raise a family and to follow fame and fortune. Fame and fortune did not make an appearance, but I managed to acquire a wife and 5 children and to have survivor's guilt for years.

During the years between ‘66 and ‘82, I pretended to know nothing about military service or Vietnam. I met an old Navy Corpsman buddy in ’82, we met again and went to the Viet Nam Wall the following year and counted at least a hundred of dead friend’s names on the pouring down rain and tear soaked wall.

By the late ‘80s, my 3 sons had donned uniforms, 2 Air Force and 1 Navy, and served honorably in a new time and new kinds of wars. My Navy son, also a Corpsman, served proudly with the Marines in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, during the Gulf War. He returned with physical health difficulties and is now a 100% disabled Vet. My other 2 sons served in other deployments and returned home without any physical ailments or injuries.

Richard G. Shuster (from Rick’s Random Ramblings, You Asked: Were you in Vietnam? ©)

In case you are looking for me, I've sailed back home.
My final voyage, the sails are set, the winds favor me.

Gently laps water, about the bow, rocking, gliding, toward promised shores.

On the nearing horizon I see, such sights you would not believe.

I think I see a friendly face, someone I used to know.
He is standing there, arms reaching out for me.
He is welcoming me home, to the final port

And The Wind Blew©

In each and every man, still remains the little boy, he once was.

A boy who wishes to be free to fly, the wind blowing on his face.

His kite climbing ever higher to the heavens above.

To sit upon a horse's back, or the fender of a tractor.

To feel the exhilaration of God's breath upon his face.

His pulse is quickened, to an ever faster pace.

He lay in field or meadow, as clouds begin, to build and billow.

With gales and gusts, trees swaying, flowers bending.

The earth below, lovingly provides his pillow.

He dreams and yearns to fly away,

to the home he no longer quite remembers.

The home he came from so long ago.

Back then, where angels were his friends

and flew together, when all was right.

And the wind blew and took that man, that little boy.

Back Home, from whence he came.

some, for many years, others, for moments sublime.

From each, there are lessons to be learned, and to be shared,

We need remember, this lifetime, is temporary and fleeting,

others leave and enter our lives, with a good bye and a meeting.

Pathways converging and crossing, provide life's valued amounts,

destinations are uncertain, so it's, indeed, the journey, that counts.

We are blessed so by others, gratefully brought to us, For a Time,

When I Could Fly©

………At times even now in the deep of night,

my dreams release me, to once again take flight.

As when an infant in playful games,

ascending I took wing, for other planes.

I know I’m not supposed to remember

those times I flew in May, July and in September.

Nor when, in Mother’s tears,

I knew immediately of her fears.

From my nap, she could not make me rise

because I was soaring, through the skies.

I know I’m not supposed to remember

those times I flew in April, June and in November.

Looking down, treetops below,

at gleaming lakes and sparkling snow,

at moonlit scapes and brilliant sun,

I flew.... I flew.... just for fun.

I know , by now, you think me crazy,

to say I’ve flown, over fields of daisys.

I know you think I’ve gone insane,

by claiming travel, through other planes.

But when I could fly, I’ll tell you this,

I could see all, which does exist.

Before adulthood, responsibility and duty,

flight introduced me, to freedom and beauty.

Now, as times bring pain and I’d like to cry,

I remember the times, when I could fly.

...............At times even now in the deep of night,

my dreams release me, to once again take flight.

Take the time for love and joy and hugs.

Take the time for feeling as the heartstring tugs.

Take the time to be very special friends.

Take the time to make all necessary amends.

Take the time to listen and to speak from your heart.

Take the time for all the good things from the start.

Take the time to write each other a heartfelt poem.

Take the time to relax together in your home.

Take the time for laughter throughout all your years

Take the time to be there for each other when there will be tears.

Take the time to be grateful to the Great Power from above,

As the seasons have changed, so have we,

to a new life, one together, for you and me.

Each in God’s own time, come the events of our life,

the best one so far, now as husband and wife.

Together we pledge, as we wed on this ship,

The lessons we’ve learned, of our stewardship.

To our own selves be true, and now to each other we cling,

in a lifetime of love, as represented by our rings.

We in gratitude express, to all gathered around,

our heartfelt caring, our love doth abound.

A new life together, a new beginning we savor,

Blessed by God, in His grace filled favor.

As the seasons have changed, so have we,

For Today’s Another Chance©

When at first we noticed each other,

it was, but a passing glance,

today, we know it’s much more than that for us,

for today’s another chance.

In the past, we know,

we let opportunities slip away,

but now we know ,

how to claim the blessings, of each and every day,

for today’s another chance.

We now know better, who it is we are,

as individuals and as a pair,

we practice a new and grateful way of life,

with daily appreciation, love and care,

for today’s another chance.

God, in His infinite wisdom,

has blessed us, to be husband and wife,

knowing us and who we are,

He has given us, a wonderful new life,

for today’s another chance.

In all the lessons we have learned

and in all, we take a stance.

Hues of Red©

Hues of red,

visions of crackling flame.

Oh yes, they can burn,

but comfort too,

the aches of a weary traveler.

Warning certainly is a noted thought,

with caution, halt, beware,

but yet

enticing,

inviting be.

Aches of the traveler call out,

heat my body, my heart, my mind, my soul.

Alas, to feel the warmth,

out of flames reach.

Close enough, be warmed

but be not scorched.

Close enough to bask in warming rays,

to borrow glimpses of dreams,

not of memories.

Hues of red,

visions of crackling flame

oh yes, they can burn,

but comfort too,

the aches of a weary traveler.

The weary traveler rests quietly,

warmed

and comforted.

WE MUST GO ON©

A Dear One’s Loss Is Never Easy, A Child’s Loss Is Never Understood.

Your Pain and Hurt, From You We’d Take, If Only That We Could.

But That’s Not Possible, That Mantle, We May Not Don.

The Best Any Of Us Can Do, Is Help You, To Go On.

Our Love And Prayers And Thoughts With You, Today And Days To Come.

Knowing of Our Caring Too, We Hope Helps Get You Through, To Each New Day’s Sun.

As Sure As A New Day Breaks, Another Morning’s Dawn,

As Sure As Our Love For You, Above All, We Must Go On.

A SPECIAL ANGEL©

A Special Angel Came To You,

The Years Entrusted, Were Only Few.

The Love And Joy She Brought To You,

Enough For A Lifetime, Maybe Two.

A Special Angel, Held In Your Arms,

Now With God The Father, Safe From Harm.

The Love And Joy She Brought To You,

For The Time Being, Will Have To Do.

A Special Angel, From Whence She Came,

Has Now Returned Home, Once Again.

You’ll Meet Again, Of That We’re Sure,

With Your Special Angel, Sweet And Pure.

Richard G. Shuster, from Rick’s Random Ramblings©

The above poems were written upon notification of the passing of my wife's Grand-Niece, resulting from a train/auto collision at a unguarded railroad crossing in Illinois. The poem, A Special Angel©, became lyrics for a country song and the rallying point for raising interest in and awareness of unguarded railroad crossings in rural areas of the Midwest. Several such dangerous crossings were changed, to now being guarded crossings, with gates and lights, within a few years since the incident. For that we thank God and know he watches over all His special children.

Happy Birthday America©

Happy Birthday America, somehow it is, you continue to live,

even after all of the times, you gave all you possibly could give.

Of your youngest and best, the promising rest, so many bodies and souls,

standing their guard and in battles reward, in the air, at sea and in foxholes.

Your sacrifices great, spread across the seas, and continents all around this Earth,

under circumstances seemingly impossible, you did what you must, and suffered the dearth.

You have fought bravely against our enemies, both the domestic and the foreign,

and continued proudly, with Old Glory out front, and refused all disdain and scorn.

A call for rights & liberties: and freedom & justice, sprung from New England’s countryside,

conceived, protected, birthed and nurtured, a gift from God Almighty, and reason for our pride.

America, as we celebrate your birthday again, in troubled and tragic times, with a new year squarely in our sights,

we also celebrate your God given birthday gifts, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Treasure Boxes©

Treasure Boxes are fun and sad and often filled with marvelous items, the kind mostly of which memories are made. A photo of that most special woman in your life, a lock of hair from a child or was it a long ago sweetheart, a broach that was Great Grandmas’, the one with the pin missing; one baby shoe, the other got lost in a move long ago, a purse bible, with now hard to read, almost scribbling, a fervent prayer written inside the back cover, when a child was ill and hope was stretched beyond it’s limits. A poem from a friend that always brought a smile, an old coin, from some far away land, a child written note that had I love you scrawled across it, an obituary yellowed with age, someone you don’t know, wonder who he was? An embroidered handkerchief only used to dry up tears. And what’s this in the bottom?, another photo, I wonder who it is, I’m sure it’s someone special, oh look, it is my picture, excuse me please, I need to cry, I wish I didn’t cry like this, but I miss her so much, especially today, you see, I’ve been going through the Treasure Box.

My Neighbor Has Moved Away©

My neighbor, now has moved away,
not to return here, on another day.
But there were things, I wanted to say.

Things said back then, and so sadly regretted,
and meant to but not said words, still neglected.

I’ve grown up now, and know what’s right,
that true neighbors, care, and never fight.

They, instead, look after, one another,
as God taught, of being sisters and brothers.

Once conflict made it so hard, to make amends,
when all along, we should have been friends.

I know, my neighbor, now has moved far away,
to a home that is far better, in every way.

A house of many mansions, awaiting my neighbor before;
my neighbor has moved there now, to move away, no more.

Many of us built walls around our feelings and thoughts, for reasons best known to us alone. That was then, today is now. Why is it that time seems to go faster and faster each year?©

How many times have we thought or been asked, "why is it that time seems to go faster and faster each year"?

Time does seem to move quicker as we get older because each additional year represents an ever diminishing portion of our total / cumulative lifetime. In short, when we were one year old that was our entire life-time, when we are one hundred years old that year will only represent one hundredth of our life-time.

Richard G. Shuster (from Rick’s Random Ramblings, Why is it that time seems to go faster and faster each year? ©) We have been ampley blessed with 19 grandchildren, and have learned one needs to think abut these kinds of questions before getting them asked by a pack of inquisitive grandkids:-)

My First Poem©

I do not remember my poems, either # one or # two,
I suppose in early elementary school,
likely it was a roses are red or the sky was blue.

I like to rhyme, but even though, the words may chime,
and some folks think it’s really cool,
at times the sing song makes me lose my mind.

Poems are less threatening than writings done in prose,
and safety seems to be the best defense,
though I wrote story line and article, a poem is what I chose.

It is not my job to prove you wrong

It is not my job to prove you wrong, only to open your thoughts and the thoughts of others. My point was about how poorly Republicans and Democrats, Conservatives and Liberals alike care for our military personnel and veterans and their families.

Those who give and have given it all for us are now too often left without adequate medical care and others left to beg in the streets. Administration after administration has provided flowery praise about their troops and vets, but it has been lip service at best.

We have 30 Million Veterans living who have served their country and another half a million standing military deployed, non-deployed active and active reserve/guard. Our long history and current policies regarding the care of our veterans and their loved ones is pitiful. We have an obligation to our military and veterans that has not and is not being fulfilled.

If only, any would have paid heed to the wise words of our first President, George Washington:

"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation."

Keeping History Alive©

I was blessed to grow-up in Pennsylvania. I need not tell you of the wealth of this nation’s history that occurred in the Commonwealth colony of Penn’s Woods. I was exposed, from my earliest remembrances, by family, community and schools to the richness of our history. I was blessed with teachers who took the time to point out our local history, our state’s role in the beginnings of what became the United States and mostly of the people who were part of it all. We learned about not only the well-known’s, but our un-known’s, as well; all the peoples of so many ethnic and religious backgrounds and their origins. We became proud of our diversity through our being united in cause and home and hope for a better future. We did not place our differences ahead of our commonalities. We built our lives on both.

My family, paternal and maternal, has representative histories of most of the early settlers of this continent. Starting in the 1600s, continuing through the 1700’s and 1800’s, they came. They came hopeful, they came brave, they came humble and they came grateful. They adopted and were adopted by the new land they now called home. They built the farms, villages, towns and great cities, they established trade and commerce, they raised and loved their families, they tilled the land, they built their houses of worship, they donned the uniforms of freedom, they depended upon their faith in an Almighty God to see them through and they were part of the development of the greatest experiment in the history of humanity, the experiment of a representative democratic-republic, a land of freedom, a land of expression, a land of liberty, and a land of justice, for all.

To have lived in the once colonial frontiers where Washington walked as a young man in the King’s service during the French and Indian Wars; To have ancestors mentioned in Washington’s early communications with his commanding officer; To have retraced the lawful immigration of ancestors from multiple places in what was then called Europa, to their new homes in the Middle-Atlantic and New England colonies; To follow those brave soul’s paths to and through the known frontiers and beyond; To be familiar and comfortable with the lands and homesteads of those principled adventurers; To visit the hallowed burial spots of so many kin who fought in every war era from the French and Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War , the War of 1812, the Civil War, Spanish American War, WW1, WW2, & Korea. To have experienced these things has kept their history alive in my mind and heart.

I am grateful for the teachers who helped me to learn and understand so much. I am grateful I learned to read the histories of my ancestry, I am grateful I can count my blessings for all the gifts of freedom I have, I am grateful for the sense of history that gives me perspective for today and tomorrow.

Who Were Our Immigrant Ancestors? ©

In our family ancestry in America, beginning with 1638 and since, from public records, all our ancestors came in the legal way, from Germany, Normandy, and all over the British Isles; England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales. They came, they worked, they built, they protected and they cared for their families and became Americans. Some spoke German, others Gaelic, some English and other dialects, too, but all adopted English as their language for it was the language of America. They paid their taxes and contributed to their communities, their churches and those in need. They shared their children as soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen and fiercely supported and defended their country, America.

Lent is all about reliving the ultimate Gift,

March Thoughts©

March is named for Mars,
mythical god of war.
Known best for its ides and St. Patrick’s Day,
and very little more.

March, a turbulent time,
with weather always changing.
A time for Spring house cleaning,
and furniture rearranging.

Tis the day for the Irish, St Paddy’s Day.
Time for corned beef and cabbage and a bit o’ beer.
Look closely tomorrow, in the morn’,
to see who’s had too much cheer.

Daylight savings time and the first day of Spring,
during this Lenten season, this year in March you’ll see.
A time of renewal and new beginning,
flowers begin blooming and buds are on the tree.

As March departs, either like a lion or a lamb,
pleasant days soon lie ahead and spirits start to soar.
If April coming up, didn’t include tax time,
We’d like it even more.

THIS IS THE PRAYER THAT ST PATRICK IS SAID TO HAVE PRAYED EVERY DAY:

WORTH PRAYING YOURSELF:

St. Patrick's Breastplate or The Deer's Cry

I arise today

I arise today

Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I arise today

I arise today through the strength of Heaven

Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.
the rays of the sun,
the radiance of the moon,
the splendor of fire,
the speed of lightening,
the swiftness of the wind,
the depth of the sea,
the stability of the earth
the firmness of rock.

I arise today through the power of God:

God's might to comfort me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to lead me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's Heavenly Host to save me
from the snares of the devil,
from temptations to sin,
from all who wish me ill,
from near and afar,
alone and with others.

May Christ shield me today

against poison and fire,
against drowning and wounding,
so that I may fulfill my mission
and bear fruit in abundance.
Christ behind and before me,
Christ behind and above me,
Christ with me and in me,
Christ around and about me,
Christ on my right and on my left,
Christ when I lie down at night,
Christ when I rise in the morning,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone that speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

A testament, of life, both old and new.
Our warmest wishes, especially for you.

Easter Greetings, at this time, for joyous reflection.
God, nature, spirit, body, mind and soul, all in resurrection.

This time is also of special significance, to many others, the world over,
when the Angel of Death chose not to stop, but instead, to Passover.

A time of renewal. a new beginning, in front of us to see.
Birds chirping, flowers begin blooming and buds are on the tree.

A time to pause, and think about God, our forever higher power.
Seen in everything, new growth, sunshine and a springtime shower.

“The Passion of the Christ”©
Several years ago, I attended the showing of what I humbly describe as the most unforgettable cinema of my 60-some years., "The Passion of the Christ".

The story, Christ's Passion, the events preceding, all are occurring again, as they do every Lenten season; hence, giving me cause to resurrect what I wrote following last year's exceptional opportunity, that being, viewing of the "Passion of the Christ"

It was wonderful and horrible, reassuring and scary, all together in an emotional rollercoaster that touched the very core of my being. I saw, in the biblical characters surrounding the crucifixion, the best and worst of myself.

Remembering our Veterans and Troops at Easter, Passover and Always

To Never be Forgotten©

How many times has the “story of stories” been repeated, by millions of families throughout the ages since?

“He gave His only Begotten Son”, rings on and on. May that sacrifice never be forgotten.

Likewise, millions of other sons and daughters have been given, in their service; to God, to Country, to Family, to Community.

They, too, gave up their begotten children, their loved ones, for us, for all of us, to never be forgotten.

As was His sacrifice, is theirs, for the ever living hope of futures bright, we join in humble gratitude, to honor and to comfort all who need, and to never be forgotten.

It is not my job to prove you wrong©

If only, any would have paid heed to the wise words of our first President, George Washington: "The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation."-George Washington–

The Power of Prayer, but yet,©

The power of a prayer is frequently underestimated, but yet;

but yet, 84% of all physicians claim prayer’s effects are positive and provide improved conditions for patients,

but yet, millions of individuals from around the world claim the power of prayer is greater than any other individual human act,

but yet, whether a frightened child or aging adult, nothing else brings the spiritual comfort of a prayer being answered,

but yet, when praying for another in need, prayer also brings blessings to those who selflessly care and pray for those others in need,

but yet, the act of opening the line of communication with our “higher power” assures our hope that others will pray for us,

but yet, if we don’t pray for others, how will we really know the Power of Prayer?

Let each mourn those they miss

Let each mourn those they miss; the ones that brought love, and joy and blessings and hope and anticipation of better things and better times.

I am tired beyond tired of lunatics and political hacks.

I pray for all, but today I cannot fathom one more replay of the lunacy found in the NBC video or the suffering and sorrow on the faces of loved ones of those lost in Virginia.

I cannot any longer stomach one more self serving verbal attack, by the likes of Harry Reid, on our standing military who serve their country as volunteers for all of us.

Let each mourn those they miss; the ones that brought love, and joy, and blessings, and hope, and anticipation of better things and better times.

Let us surround ourselves with the ones who bring love, and joy, and blessings, and hope, and anticipation of better things and better times yet to come.

Ramblings for May©

May begins, the month of flowers,
as Mother Earth, unfolds her powers.
Garden planting, get out the tools.
Summer’s coming, clean out the pools.

Mother’s Day, is soon upon us,
from whence we came, it does remind us.
From time to time, we contemplate,
her loving sacrifices and care so great.

Fertilized it, so it would look nice.
Think I used it, only twice.
Out of breath, can hardly speak,
the lawn, now needs mowing, twice a week.

Memorial Day, once a time, to commemorate,
those who have died in wars, to keep us great.
Those feelings, now I fear, have greatly weakened,
instead replaced, by America’s love, of the 3 day weekend.

Happy Mother's Day©

A special wish for you all,

who are today, or may,

be in the future, Mothers.

To Wives, to Mom's and to all Grandmas,

to Daughters and the Wives of Sons

and to all Sisters, of their Brothers.

A special day, indeed it is,

to commemorate, the art of Motherhood.

A lifetime of dedication, born of love, nurtured,

truly only, as a Mother could.

Devotion, care and worry,

with many tiring days and many sleepless nights.

Loving struggles, to maintain hearth and home,

and to make all things alright.

While growing up, she made well again,

all bruises, cuts and scrapes

and broken hearts as well.

Mother cured them all,

with hugs and smiles and cookies,

and other special secret things,

we promised not to tell.

Our special thanks to you,

and to Mothers everywhere.

For on our Mom's knee we learned,

of love and hope and what it means to care.

Happy Mother's Day

Treasure Boxes©

Treasure Boxes are fun and sad and often filled with marvelous items, the kind mostly of which memories are made. A photo of that most special person in your life, a lock of hair from a child or was it a long ago sweetheart, a broach that was Great Grandmas’, the one with the pin missing; one baby shoe, the other got lost in a move long ago, a pocket/purse bible, with now hard to read, almost scribbling, a fervent prayer written inside the back cover, when a child was ill and hope was stretched beyond it’s limits. A poem from a friend that always brought a smile, an old coin, from some far away land, a child written note that had I love you scrawled across it, an obituary yellowed with age, someone you don’t know, wonder who that was? An embroidered handkerchief only used to dry up tears. And what’s this in the bottom?, another photo, I wonder who it is, I’m sure it’s someone special, oh look, it is my picture, excuse me please, I need to cry, I wish I didn’t cry like this, but I miss her so much, especially today, you see, I’ve been going through the Treasure Box.

Richard G. Shuster (from Rick’s Random Ramblings, Treasure Boxes©) Dedicated to all Mothers and Grandmothers who left us their Treasure Boxes and to all of those of us who have gone through their Treasure Boxes after our Moms and Grammas have gone. One Veterans Pledge©

Memorial Day Memories©

A serious time, yet one that always brings hope….

It seems like yesterday, when but a lad of eleven, twelve and thirteen, back in Union City, PA. I was a junior member of the VFW Post Drum and Bugle Corps, an adventure I shall never forget and always cherish. A time that I learned of wars and of those who fought them and those who remained at home to await the return of their loved ones.

I learned the deepest respect for the old timers and their stories of valor and fear and faith and courage, often in eulogies at graveside. The drums beat cadence, the glockenspiels called the order, and the bugles recalled taps in honor of all who passed in the line of duty, as they have done for time beyond my memory and will, I hope, long after I am gone.

Moms

Your Mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street. She's the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick and perfume that she wore. She's the cool hand on your brow when you're not feeling well, she's your breath in the air on a cold winter's day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning.

Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop. A mother shows every emotion .......... happiness, sadness, fear, jealousy, love, hate, anger, helplessness, excitement, joy, sorrow..... and all the while, hoping and praying you will only know the good feelings in life. She's the place you came from, your first home, and she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space.......not even death!

Armed Forces Day

This Saturday, 19 May, is Armed Forces Day, first set aside in 1949 by President Harry Truman to recognize the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense and to acknowledge the extraordinary dedication of America's uniformed Patriots standing ready in harm's way at home and around the world.

In the words of President Dwight Eisenhower, "It is fitting and proper that we devote one day each year to paying special tribute to those whose constancy and courage constitute one of the bulwarks guarding the freedom of this nation and the peace of the free world."

Since the opening shots of the American Revolution on 19 April 1775, American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen have plowed the ground for freedom. We remain the proud and the free because they remain on post today. For this, we, the American People, offer our heartfelt thanks.

Take the time and make the effort to honor today’s men & women in uniform, and remember always our Veterans, those who yesterday proudly wore their uniforms.

If nothing is worth dying for, when did this begin?

Should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in slavery under the pharaohs?

Should Christ have refused the cross?

Should the patriots of Concord Bridge have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the shot heard round the world?"

Each New Day

Each new day God provides for us a new beginning,

Each new day is cause to celebrate and to express our gratitude.

Each new day is a day for reflection upon past, current and future.

Each new day is an opportunity for giving and receiving forgiveness.

Each new day is a perfect gift from God for us to appreciate.

Each new day belongs to God and is shared with us.

Reflections on Memorial Day

Let each and every one of us reflect this Memorial Day about the
real meanings and what it has meant to us throughout our lives.
To me, it is all about those who have given all, for me.
I shall never forget those who have paid that ultimate price.

Balance©

We all need realize that in our lives we need balance just like all finely made precision instruments.

We learn to maintain our balance by avoiding excesses in any part of our existence.

We attempt to include in ourselves the right amounts of those of life’s balancing ingredients.

We include in our balance; spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical, and environmental weights.

We also realize that this balancing requirement that we embrace is somewhat unsteady at times.

We think somehow that the balance should be tight, precise and never wavering, firm footed and solid.

We soon find it is more like a small flat river raft, sometimes smoothly gliding, at other times hanging-on.

We often find that the balance most needed in our lives is the others, who like ourselves, need the balanceof us in theirs.

June©

June, the month we look forward to, the beginning of summer.
Outdoor activities, travel, entertainment and fun,
from June through August, we're all on the run.
The downside of June, the year's now half over, oh what a bummer.

Warm sunshine, bright blue skies and soft breezes,
as pollen counts bring for some, uncontrollable sneezes.
Seems so long since the snow, the great winter of skiing,
this month we call June, brings to us all, a great sense of being.

The weekend soon gone, dedicated to Father,
never quite like for Mom, less fuss and less bother,
but memories we have, some happy, some sad,
for that someone so special, we call our Dad.

This month, as we enter the solstice, the meridian of our year,
summertime activities, now move into high gear.
Boating, swimming, fishing, camping, golfing, biking, we go,
only four months or five and we'll be wading through snow.

As we now greet June head-on, and soon welcome July,
the heat starts to increase and the lawns start to dry
We now start looking for shade and a cool spot to rest,
but remember last winter, when we said it's summer, that is best.

The History of Flag Day

http://www.usflag.org/history/flagday.html

The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'.

On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day.

Following the suggestion of Colonel J Granville Leach (at the time historian of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution), the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America on April 25, 1893 adopted a resolution requesting the mayor of Philadelphia and all others in authority and all private citizens to display the Flag on June 14th. Leach went on to recommend that thereafter the day be known as 'Flag Day', and on that day, school children be assembled for appropriate exercises, with each child being given a small Flag.

Two weeks later on May 8th, the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution unanimously endorsed the action of the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames. As a result of the resolution, Dr. Edward Brooks, then Superintendent of Public Schools of Philadelphia, directed that Flag Day exercises be held on June 14, 1893 in Independence Square. School children were assembled, each carrying a small Flag, and patriotic songs were sung and addresses delivered.

In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public school children's celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating.

Adults, too, participated in patriotic programs. Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: "I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself."
Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916.

While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Our National Anthem

Note- Near the end of his life the great science fiction author Isaac Asimov wrote a short story about the four stanzas of our national anthem. However brief, this well-circulated
piece is an eye opener from the dearly departed doctor......

I have a weakness -- I am crazy? absolutely nuts, about our national anthem. The words are difficult and the tune is almost impossible, but frequently when I'm taking a shower I sing it with as much power and emotion as I can. It shakes me up every time.

I was once asked to speak at a luncheon. Taking my life in my hands, I announced I was going to sing our national anthem -- all four stanzas. This was greeted with loud groans. One man closed the door to the kitchen, where the noise of dishes and cutlery was loud and distracting. "Thanks, Herb," I said.

"That's all right," he said. "It was at the request of the kitchen staff."

I explained the background of the anthem and then sang all four stanzas. Let me tell you, those people had never heard it before -- or had never really listened. I got a standing ovation. But it was not me; it was the anthem.

More recently, while conducting a seminar, I told my students the story of the anthem and sang all four stanzas. Again there was a wild ovation and prolonged applause. And again, it was the anthem and not me.

So now let me tell you how it came to be written.

In 1812, the United States went to war with Great Britain, primarily over freedom of the seas. We were in the right. For two years, we held off the British, even though we were still a rather weak country. Great Britain was in a life and death struggle with Napoleon. In fact, just as the United States declared war, Napoleon marched off to invade Russia. If he won, as
everyone expected, he would control Europe, and Great Britain would be isolated. It was no time for her to be involved in an American war.

At first, our seamen proved better than the British. After we won a battle on Lake Erie in 1813, the American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, sent the message, "We have met the enemy and they are ours." However, the weight of the British navy beat down our ships eventually. New England, hard-hit by a
tightening blockade, threatened secession.

Meanwhile, Napoleon was beaten in Russia and in 1814 was forced to abdicate. Great Britain now turned its attention to the United States, launching a three-pronged attack.

The northern prong was to come down Lake Champlain toward New York and seize parts of New England.

The southern prong was to go up the Mississippi, take New Orleans and paralyze the west.

The central prong was to head for the mid-Atlantic states and then attack Baltimore, the greatest port south of New York. If Baltimore was taken, the nation, which still hugged the Atlantic coast, could be split in two. The fate of the United States, then, rested to a large extent on the success or failure of the central prong.

The British reached the American coast, and on August 24, 1814, took Washington, D.C. Then they moved up the Chesapeake Bay toward Baltimore. On September 12, they arrived and found 1,000 men in Fort McHenry, whose guns controlled the harbor. If the British wished to take Baltimore, they would have to take the fort.

On one of the British ships was an aged physician, William Beanes, who had been arrested in Maryland and brought along as a prisoner Francis Scott Key, a lawyer and friend of the physician, had come to the ship to negotiate his release.

The British captain was willing, but the two Americans would have to wait. It was now the night of September 13, and the bombardment of Fort McHenry was about to start.

As twilight deepened, Key and Beanes saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry. Through the night, they heard bombs bursting and saw the red glare of rockets. They knew the fort was resisting and the American flag was still flying. But toward morning the bombardment ceased, and a dread silence
fell. Either Fort McHenry had surrendered and the British flag flew above it, or the bombardment had failed and the American flag still flew.

As dawn began to brighten the eastern sky, Key and Beanes stared out at the fort, trying to see which flag flew over it. He and the physician must have asked each other over and over, "Can you see the flag?"

After it was all finished, Key wrote a four stanza poem telling the events of the night. Called "The Defense of Fort McHenry," it was published in newspapers and swept the nation. Someone noted that the words fit an old English tune called, "To Anacreon in Heaven" -- a difficult melody with an uncomfortably large vocal range. For obvious reasons, Key's work became known as "The
Star Spangled Banner," and in 1931 Congress declared it the official anthem of the United States.

Now that you know the story, here are the words. Presumably, the old doctor is speaking. This is what he asks Key:

Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.

Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

"Ramparts," in case you don't know, are the protective walls or other elevations that surround a fort. The first stanza asks a question. The second gives an answer:

On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mist of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep.
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream
'Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

"The towering steep" is again, the ramparts. The bombardment has failed, and the British can do nothing more but sail away, their mission a failure. In the third stanza, I feel Key allows himself to gloat over the American triumph. In the aftermath of the bombardment, Key probably was in no mood to act otherwise.

During World War II, when the British were our staunchest allies, this third stanza was not sung. However, I know it, so here it is:

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The fourth stanza, a pious hope for the future, should be sung more slowly than the other three and with even deeper feeling:

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,
Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven - rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause is just,
And this be our motto --"In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I hope you will look at the national anthem with new eyes. Listen to it, the next time you have a chance, with new ears. Pay attention to the words. And don't let them ever take it away .... not even one word of it.

It's Father's Day Once Again©

What I'd Like for Father's Day©

What do you think Dad would like for Father’s Day? What do you want for Father’s Day, Dad? Not uncommon questions, but they prompted this Dad to think what he’d like most if he could have the gift of his choice from his children.

The gift he would like to receive the most would be to have a letter from his children; not a group letter, but individual letters, written or typed, it matters not, but an individualized letter to your Dad telling him what you think you’d like him to know.

My Dad left this world without ever knowing the many things, thoughts as an adult, I would have liked to have shared with him, had he still been alive, when I was 30 years old, and 35, 40, 50, and now at 62.

So, if you are thinking about a present for your Dad for Fathers’ Day, write him a letter. Neckties and tee-shirts and barbeque mitts all disappear, but your thoughts and words will forever stay with your Dad.

Love Always, Dad

Father's Day is Only a Week Away©

We all know Father's Day, is usually not a real big deal
and from Mom and her day, none of it we'd ever steal.

But I think for Dad, its time he got his just due
so for the next few days, that's exactly what I'll do.

Unlike Mom, Dad's thoughts are not so sticky sweet,
so if anything seems offensive, hit the button named delete.

Some Dad originals, and some Dad thoughts from some others,
will arrive to share, with all Dads who are our brothers.

Remember too, husbands, brothers, nephews and all granddads,
include all sons-in-law, cousins, and other kinds of Dads.

Through the years, Dad's Day, has brought me joy and pride,
whether with my own Dad, or with my children by my side.

So here we go, the week ahead, thoughts both happy and sad,
but most of all, they are sent along to honor dear old Dad.

Happy Dad's Day to the Fathers of All Our Grandchildren©

The weekend soon gone, dedicated to Father,
never quite like for Mom, less fuss and less bother,
but memories we have, some happy, some sad,
for that someone so special, we call our Dad.

Once said, any man can be a Father,
but takes a special man, to be a Dad.
To the Dads, of our grandchildren,
you are the best Dads, they could have had.

Perfect Dads, well, that might be stretching it a lot,
but no other Dads could love and care for them,
as you do, since you give it all you've got.

We want you to know how proud we are of you,
and know that your children, also feel, the way we do.

We understand why your children proudly consider you,
as their hero and their star.
And with pride and much gratitude,
to know, what kind of men, their Dad's really are.

About My Dad©

I wish to write to you, about my Dad,
he was the one and only, that I had.

Besides all that, he was special to me,
he was the best darn Dad, he could be.

Was he perfect? I'd have to say, not quite,
but for me, my Dad was quite alright.

Long gone from this world, he remains in me,
as an imperfect Dad, who wished he could be.

I don't judge his shortcomings, nor things left undone,
and hope my children don't either, daughters or sons.

You see, Dads are not perfect, though try like they might,
but miss them you do, once gone forever, out of your sight.

Remember the best times, remember one and all you have had,
for the best times remembered, keeps you ever, close to your Dad.

Fathers Day, Now is Gone©

Fathers Day, now is gone, for another year,
with some memories glad and some memories sad,
some laughs and joy, and a couple of tears.

Time to reflect now upon, only those memories good,
and remember, what Fathers Day, is really all about,
to be the best darn Father, that any Father ever could.

My Father

When I was ...

* Four years old: My daddy can do anything.

* Five years old: My daddy knows a whole lot.

* Six years old: My dad is smarter than your dad.

* Eight years old: My dad doesn't know exactly everything.

* Ten years old: In the olden days, when my dad grew up, things were
sure different.

* Twelve years old: Oh, well, naturally, Dad doesn't know anything
about that. He is too old to remember his childhood.

* Fourteen years old: Don't pay any attention to my dad. He is so
old-fashioned.

* Twenty-one years old: Him? My Lord, he's hopelessly out of date.

* Twenty-five years old: Dad knows about it, but then he should,
because he has been around so long.

* Thirty years old: Maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks. After all,
he's had a lot of experience.

* Thirty-five years old: I'm not doing a single thing until I talk to
Dad.

* Forty years old: I wonder how Dad would have handled it. He was so
wise.

* Fifty years old: I'd give anything if Dad were here now so I could
talk this over with him. Too bad I didn't appreciate how smart he was. I could
have learned a lot from him.

July and Thoughts of Independence

JULY©

Summer here and now in full swing
folks are busy, doing Summer things.
Camping, boating, fishing...more,
as long as it can be done, outdoors.
Commitment to Independence, on July 4th is made,
gratefully, with picnics, and fireworks, after the parade.
Great sacrifices remembered, for liberty and freedom,
continued this day, protecting country, family and home.

The month of July, from end to end, each and every part,
Here in the Reno, NV area, we proudly celebrate the Arts.
http://www.renoisartown.com/ (http://www.renoisartown.com/)

The heat is on, the sun begins to bake,
everyone's mind’s, on going to the lake.
Be sure to use plenty of sun screen,
or your sunburn, will surely ache.
Everywhere now, as we look around,
hillsides, parks and lawns turn brown!
The heat is intense, the air, it is dry,
water twice a week, or it'll surely die!
July rapidly closing, time now is in flight.
A new month beginning, with old sounds and sights,
before you know, it soon will be, "Hot August Nights".

The Concord Hymn

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled;
Here once the embattled farmers stood;
And fired the shot heard round the world.
The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps,
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream that seaward creeps.
On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We place with joy a votive stone,
That memory may their deeds redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.
O Thou who made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
--Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raised to them and Thee.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

(In memory of the initial battle for Independence in April 1775)

A call for rights & liberties: and freedom & justice, sprung from New England’s countryside;
conceived, protected, birthed and nurtured; a gift from God Almighty, and reason for our pride.

America, as we celebrate your birthday again, in troubled and tragic times, with a new year squarely in our sights,
we also celebrate your God given birthday gifts, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

The Home Body

Consider for a moment that we all have fears to overcome, inadequacies to conquor and dreams yet to dream and realize.

For some it comes fast, for others slowly, but it comes.

Given the opportunity and the adventure; to take a little risk, to push ourselves a little more, to ask for the dance, to venture the kiss, to try the new job, to move to a strange place where you know nobody at all, to work in labor never tried before, it all is within to do so.

When you take the risk; make the effort, push the envelope, spread your mind and wings; you will find the same guy inside, but now he's the one who thinks he's glad he is who he is.

OUR SOLDIERS

This is outstanding....makes me so proud of our young people in uniform.
As I have said many times over.....NONE BRAVER....NONE BETTER

From a Chaplain in Iraq.
"I recently attended a showing of "Superman 3" here at LSA Anaconda. We have a large auditorium we use for movies as well as memorial services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through the National Anthem the music stopped. Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments, and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place. Here, the 1,000 soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect to happen? Even here I would imagine laughter as everyone sat down and expected the movie to start. Here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every soldier stood at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers 'And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?' It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here.

I am reminded that we cannot cure the ills of the past by replacing them with the ills of today…
Also, we cannot discard the dysfunctional parties of the past only to form dysfunctional parties of the future…

I am a conservative constitutionalist who believes in the great experiment; a participatory-republic, of by and for those governed; and seeped in recognition and reverence for God Almighty and of profound respect for one another.

To those erstwhile principles and ends, I remain committed.

Time to trade-in all the millstones for milestones...

Noting that we can accumulate millstones of our own making, we need not accept those of others who wish to add them to our necks.

Some, it seems, are not happy unless making others miserable. Good intentions or plain character assasination, often not discernable to the untrained spirit center, are clearly obvious to those with the Spirit as a companion.

Prayer and accepting the Spirit to guide and direct us, lifts the guise of those wishing to burden others with their own millstones. We need not take on those burdens.

We all have been called to create Godly milestones in our lives; "many have been called, but few are chosen", tells the rest of the story. Some make their choices to create millstones for self and for others. Today we choose to follow God and create milestones instead.

Keep fighting the good fight.

Today's Four Greatest Global Threats

1. As an internal weakness, turning away by the people, from God’s teachings.

2. As a condition, porous borders; uncontrolled illegal alien occupancy.

3. As a movement, world-wide; Jihad-driven Islamofascism.

4. As a single nationalist country, with borders; China.

August in Northern Nevada
August 2007 Reno/Sparks, NV©

This is the month, for sounds and sights,
that we fondly call, Hot August Nights®.

Nostalgic tunes, of Rock and Bop,
The prom, the concerts, and the hop.

6,000 Classic Cars roll down our streets, with a now familiar roar,
Old time Rockers appear, eight hundred thousand, or even more.

August 3rd, the party starts, it'll be, completely outta' sight,
Its time to enjoy, Hot August Nights®

Soon the music is over, crowds are gone, with few remaining classics,
but memories linger-on, for novices, enthusiasts and all of us fanatics.

We did it all, we did not stop, a week in August, the weather hot!
The cruising, the concerts, the parties, prom and hop.

Looking back, as through the rear view mirror,
at the music, cars and nostalgic cheer.

Time now to reminisce, recover and savor memories dear,
yes, Hot August Nights® is over now, until another year.

Family vacations, now in high gear,
before we know it, another school year.

The Summer sun, now begins to slide,
not as high in the sky, does it now ride.

Summer now is on the run, almost over, it's almost done.
Oh how did that happen, oh how could it be?

If only a few more months, Summer could stay,
but alas, Labor Day is only, another week away.

CLC Baptism Concludes, Participants Immersed in Principle

If you were a participant at the 2007 Conservative Leadership Conference this past week in Reno/Sparks, Nevada, you have come away a renewed man or woman. If you did not attend, you may have missed the greatest Conservative spiritual event in modern Conservative history.

As a rapidly seasoning citizen, over the past six decades I have seen and participated in many political events, some grand, some mundane; but absolutely none such as enjoyed this past week. To be encircled by the best of past, present and future of principled leaders of the constitution based, conservative movements of today’s America was akin to a faith-based spiritual experience.

To hear the words of truth and right, to walk into the waters of renewal and to arise with the assist of the hands and hearts of the anointed was a moving experience that offered hope and anticipation and welcoming another try at the revival of principle over politics in our precious God given Republic.

Over the next couple of weeks or so, I will attempt to share glimpses into the expansion of insight, inspiration, and illumination of thought that was the 2007 Conservative Leadership Conference.

CLC 2007 Highlights, the Wedding

As we continue to look at some of the many highlights of CLC 2007, I will attempt to share glimpses into the expansion of insight, inspiration, and illumination of thought that was the 2007 Conservative Leadership Conference.

It is unlikely CLC 2007, would have happened at all or unquestionably with the levels of professionalism and inspiration without its superbly capable organizers, Eric Odom and Chuck Muth, highly respected experts in their individual fields of expertise. Odom and Muth coupled together their experience and exceptional perspectives into a wedding of what is hoped will be a long lasting marriage of the best of constitutional conservatism and the professional skills with technical tools to bring about a meaningful revival of conservatism to assure America’s future as it was intended by our nation’s founders.

Like most large family weddings, cousins from various branches of the common families appeared. Constitutional Conservatives, Independent Conservatives, Libertarians, and Republicans took their seats with the respective sides of the family for the wedding.

Finding joy and hope as the marriage ceremony progressed the family members found new unification in their ancestral and historical roots. Vows were made, toasts were done, the music brought a new rhythm to those in attendance.

By the time the wedding reception was over, this gathering was much a closer unit with cousins from all branches making their own vows to be a closer family from now on. Leaving the event with updated address books, and communication information, and renewal of the family bond, these cousins and other kin proceeded home with great renewal of common kinship.

Admittedly, a bit of a dreamer, this writer envisioned this wedding as also being attended by scores of the nation’s founding fathers and mothers. In our midst were the time and principle tempered individuals who placed everything they had; fortune, fame, and family on the line, to bring forward and secure the American Republic for all who would come in future years. That feeling of attachment with them lingers with this aging conservative.

CLC 2007, Up-Close and Personal

Continuing to look at some of the many highlights of Conservative Leadership Conference 2007, Up-Close and Personal comes to mind, when considering the remarkable venue of eyeball to eyeball, handshaking closeness, with an amazing array of Conservative leaders, philosophers, teachers, and students. At age 62, this writer includes himself, very much so, as among the students in attendance.

Participation of everyone in attendance was accomplished through masterful and excellent use of combining Town Hall appearances by leading Republican and Libertarian Presidential Candidates, keynote and featured speakers who are the literal who’s who in the world of Conservative policy and politics, and open and lively panel discussions with the best of the best of movers and shakers in the political and professional blogosphere, podcasting and media communications arenas.

Novice and seasoned attendees enjoyed elbow rubbing and candid conversations with Presidential Candidates, Governors, Members of Congress, and leadership from all philosophical disciplines of Constitutional, Independent, Libertarian and Republican Conservatism. Equally impressive and available were those from the technical, education, author, grassroots organizations, activist, civil and constitutional legal, broadcasting, communications, internet and blogosphere professions.

For those who were not at this conference and would have liked to have been, I would not be surprised if you are feeing like you really missed-out on something very special and exceptional. You did! It was a rare experience to be Up-Close and Personal with the number and quality of those who made up Conservative Leadership Conference 2007. For those of us participating, we are looking forward to CLC 2008.

As these highlights of CLC 2007 continue, this writer will be sharing tid-bits and entire bites of information about the individuals and sessions that were CLC 2007.

Time for a New Political Party?

To all, of these troubled and tragic times;

Yes, we are in troubled and tragic times, with little vision or positive direction from any part of our government.

Perhaps this is the time to bring forth a new party.

I see that our currently empowered political parties are unwilling or unable to address the earned rights and benefits of our veterans, who have given their all. I cannot avoid the sight of the ruins of life and liberty under the feet of well shoed politicians calling themselves Democrat and Republican and Liberal and Conservative.

I understand that you and many of us are more than slightly disappointed in the actions inside the current administration toward veterans and those outside of the administration are doing little different from those on the inside.

Yes, we are in troubled and tragic times, with little vision or positive direction from any part of our government.

Perhaps this is the time to bring forth a new party.

For years I have resisted at looking toward a 3rd or 4th party to provide what I thought we could change through our membership and participation in one of the 2 major parties. Apparently someone lied to us in our US History, Civics and Government classes in high school and college, or, something else has happened to our government that we have overlooked in our trust that those who run our government are there to look after our citizenry. It certainly does not look like that in either the Democrat or Republican Parties.

Perhaps this is the time to bring forth a new party.

Like yourself I'm a Veteran who would like to see a world without the need for military action....Iraq is a product of the past 50 years of mismanagement by the US, the UN and political ambitions....I have true friends who are Muslim, Jewish, and other faiths, as well as numerous Christians from one end of the spectrum to the other. None of us like wars, but all of us recognize the need to clean house when housecleaning is needed. Due process, change through electoral procedures and other civil processes is always first choice, but reality does not always allow for those processes to work.

Do I want to see us at war in Iraq, or any other place, the answer is no... Do I want the Bin-Ladens, Saddams, Hitlers, Pol-Pots, etc., of the world to go unchecked, absolutely not. The UN has not lived up to it's charter, no big surprise. US foreign policy since the 2nd World War, has not worked either.

Perhaps this is the time to bring forth a new party.

The international dynamics of power, greed, control of natural resources and man's inhumanity to man, all make the scenario of war inevitable, as it has since man's beginnings, that, I fear, will never change. We are stuck in a world of the lesser of evils, or the perceived lessers....all with fault, all with downsides.... I am not too fond of G.W. Bush, even though I had hopes he would be a good President, I do not issue him much of a passing grade. I was not too fond of Clinton either, and in my estimation, he was a poor representative of our country, in many ways... The truth of the matter is, other than Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Reagan, (post-WW2) it is my opinion "all the rest" have been lackluster Presidents.

Perhaps this is the time to bring forth a new party.

But worse than the ineffectiveness, our government is and has been controlled by a government within a government, not partisan, but power and economic controllers, with heavy influence by international business interests, the military industrial complex, players of God in medical experimentation and myriad other such atrocities....I fear we all are pawns in the hands of these power brokers, your protests, my protests, your feelings, my feelings, none mean anything at all...we have no control, no real influence, all our efforts do is keep stirring more dust into the air, which helps obscure the real goings on in the background and the backrooms and the boardrooms of the power brokers of the world...We fool ourselves greatly to believe otherwise....our villains are truly dressed in many cloaks.

Perhaps this is the time to bring forth a new party.

Thoughts of a new political party offer some exciting possibilities; a fresh, focused, uncorrupted, new beginning. It brings to mind the meetings of the Continental Congresses, the challenge and risks of beginning a Democratic Republic, the sacrifices made by the framers of our inspired Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights.

The other side of the coin is we must, if taking this course of action, beware of the pitfalls of the parties who are not fulfilling their responsibilities and obligations, we need assure to avoid all forms of impropriety, we must always stand vigilant that such a party does not become or is not, through infiltration, but an extension of one or both of the other parties, and we shall give no quarter for the extremes of the wings, left or right.

Preservation of the best of our structure of government through our Constitution is paramount to our success as a new party and as a nation.
Yes, we are in troubled and tragic times, with little vision or positive direction from any part of our government.

Perhaps this is the time to bring forth a new party.

The Red Sox are Coming, The Red Sox are Coming

OK, OK,

I have had feathers to chew before, not likely the last time either, but my AL Cleveland Indians mis-read the history surrounding the Boston folks.

The Tribe thought (or not) while reading their public school primers, it stated "The Red Coats are Coming, The Red Coats are Coming": alas, in 2007 it became The Red Sox are Coming, The Red Sox are Coming.

I know its not PC, but to say the Tribe got scalped by the boys in Red Sox would be an understatement.

Last time my Cleveland Indians earned the AL championship and went on to win the World Series was 1948, I was 4 years old and I have been a Tribe fan since that year. Guess I will not give up on them yet, who knows, maybe next year.

In the meantime congratulations to The Red Sox.

We can discuss my NL favorite Pittsburgh Pirates next year, too.

Of a
Veteran

A Veteran- whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve- is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to the ‘United States of America’, for an amount of’ up to and including my life.’

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

One Veteran’s Pledge©

Constitution Party Announces Veterans Coalition

October 24, 2007 06:09 PM EST

(Lancaster, PA) Jim Clymer, chairman of the Constitution Party National Committee, America’s largest and fastest growing third party, announced today the formation of the Constitution Party National Veterans Coalition.

"I am very pleased to announce that a most distinguished group of American veterans led by Brigadier General Charles Jones, USAFR Ret., of Las Vegas, Nevada, who will serve as chairman, have come together to form the Constitution Party National Veterans Coalition for the purpose of reaching out to America’s true heroes, its veterans. We wish to let them know they have a political home in the Constitution Party, a party which seeks to preserve and protect the national security, constitutional principles and freedoms for which they sacrificed so selflessly,” said Clymer.

General Jones added, “Veterans nationwide strongly believe the Democrat and Republican Parties have failed the American people in many ways and have done little to correct major problems in our society. Examples include allowing our borders to be unsecured, permitting an illegal invasion of over 20 million aliens, failing to protect against the effects of Islamic extremism and making us dependent upon foreign oil controlled by states that support terrorists. The safety of our people, our culture and the very future of America is at great risk because the politicians of both major parties have been derelict in not placing principle above party and country before self. We are asking fellow Military Veterans to once again band together, this time at the ballot box, before we descend into a national political disaster fostered by an invasion of illegal aliens and terrorism sponsored by nations on whom we depend for oil.”

The Veterans Coalition propounds that the only real solution is to reject the failed policies of the past and replace those politicians who are responsible for those failures with leaders who will faithfully follow the Constitution and truly represent the interests of the American people. To save our civilization, we must enforce our laws by securing the borders, imposing severe sanctions upon employers of illegal aliens, halting all taxpayer funded subsidies and social programs for illegal aliens and removing 20 million illegals by attrition through enforcement. Illegal immigrants are crushing our medical, educational, welfare, economic and penal systems and the American taxpayer in the process.

The Veterans Coalition’s immediate goal is to reach out to the 26 million veterans, plus their families and friends, to let them know that the Constitution Party stands 100% beside them in defense of America’s Constitution and its national security, its sovereignty and its freedoms. It will let them know that there is a strong Constitution Party option at the ballot box for those who want to change policy rather than merely changing administrators of failed policies.

The Veterans Coalition will focus on six urgent national issues:

1. Secure Borders

2. Strong National Defense

3. Punish Employers of Illegal Aliens to the full extent of the law

4. Limit Taxes to those for Constitutionally authorized expenditures(to include abolishing the IRS and replacing the current tax system)

5. Eliminate Taxpayer Subsidies and Social Programs for Illegal Aliens

6. Attain Energy Independence within five years

Veterans and their families and friends are encouraged to find out more about the Constitution Party and to join in this effort by visiting the national party website at;
www.constitutionpartycom
or by calling;

How to catch wild Pigs

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some Exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Prof noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt. The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, " Do you know how to catch wild pigs?" The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke."You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. While we continually lose our freedoms- just a little at a time.

Important Facts one should always remember

"There is no such thing as a free lunch!"

"You can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself."

"If you see that all of this wonderful government "help" is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you are on the right side of the fence.

" If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate slams shut!"

1. Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before. Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; forward into battle see his banners go!

Refrain: Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before.

2. At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee; on then, Christian soldiers, on to victory! Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise; brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.

(Refrain)

3. Like a mighty army moves the church of God; brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod. We are not divided, all one body we, one in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

(Refrain)

4. Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane, but the church of Jesus constant will remain. Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail; we have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail.

(Refrain)

5. Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng, blend with ours your voices in the triumph song. Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King, this through countless ages men and angels sing.

(Refrain)

I can't get this old hymn out of my mind, On Veterans Day and Everyday

Thank You and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones...

We haven’t caught up to the fact it is another Thanksgiving already,
but, I can include a few ramblings for your Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones.

Thanksgiving©

Being thankful for our abundance,
while giving to those less fortunate

Giving Thanks is not only for November©

Having, feeling, and expressing gratitude, through the giving of thanks
is not intended, to be exclusively reserved, for the month of November.

Thanksgiving is a holiday, to remind us annually, of an event when we give thanks,
but things for which we are grateful today, likewise tomorrow, we should always remember.

Special Seasonal Thoughts: At Hanukkah

"Inner Engravings"

Upon every person's soul there are words written and words engraved.
The words that are written are not of the essence of the person--they come to the soul from the outside. Therefore, they may fade and fall away, perhaps to be replaced by other words.

The words engraved are of the soul itself--just as engravings are no more than the form of the stone. When the soul finds quietude, those words are there. And when the soul is in turmoil, or soiled by experience, those engravings need only be cleaned and uncovered. But they can never be torn away.

Those words engraved upon your soul, they are also engraved in a holy fire within the depths of the Soul of All Things. They are the same words that Moses heard and inscribed on stone and on parchment. And at times, when you immerse in the Torah and the words of its sages, and you allow it entry to touch your soul, you may hear those words resonating inside.

God's Temples©

If God's Temples are not first built in the hearts of man,
then it is of little use to build them of stone and mortar...

A Brief History of Hanukkah

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem
Hanukkah (Hebrew for “dedication”), annual festival of the Jewish people celebrated on eight successive days. It begins on the 25th day of Kislev, the third month of the Jewish calendar, corresponding, approximately, to December in the Gregorian calendar. Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of Lights, Feast of Dedication, and Feast of the Maccabees.

December and Thoughts for the Holidays©

Busy streets with twinkling lights glistening on the snow
can not match a child's anticipation, with eyes all aglow.

As Christmas nears, time moves slow, with slumber hard to find.
Hoping for good deeds remembered, all others left behind.

Houses cheery, with decorations on display.
People looking forward, to the coming Christmas day.

The cards and letters mailed and shopping nearly done.
The Holiday, upon us soon, a time for family fun.

People all-over begin holiday travel,
and last minute shoppers begin to unravel.

Miles to be covered and gifts to be wrapped,
resolved last year, never again would be trapped.

If this sounds all too familiar, to many it might,
know you're in good company, come Christmas night.

Merry Christmas, With love, joy, peace and goodwill to man,
sounds very much like a worthwhile plan.

Winter

Winter is fun with the family.

Winter is drinking hot chocolate.
Winter is Lake Tahoe.
Winter is skiing up in the mountains.
Winter is mornings.
Winter is home made coffee cake on Christmas morning.
Winter is sledding down your driveway.
Winter is white snow.

And most importantly, Winter is Christmas.

A ‘Sign’?

It is not a ‘sign’ that a young woman has a child.

It is a ‘sign’, a miracle, that a virgin has a child.

Merry Christmas

All Too Soon©

All too soon and more quickly now, our old friends depart our presence, leaving us the loss of their company and accessibility;
but in return, they leave us sweet memories, of another time, a time of youth and friendship, and promise and hope.

That is enough for us now, until once again we meet in that place of eternal promise and hope.

The Trees are Singing©

Wait, shhhh, what is that? It sounds like singing.
Shhhh, there it is again. It is coming from the trees.

The trees are singing; the Birch, the Oak, the Aspen.
How can it be? I did not know that could happen.

Ah, yes, of course, the winds are choreographing
the Maple, the Cottonwood, the Sumac, the Pine.
All together the trees are singing, it’s not only in my mind.

The branches and limbs, now join this woodland dance.
Leaves keeping time, as all nature joins joyously in their song
Their music, the singing of the trees, has put me in a trance.

Wait, shhhh, what is that? It sounds like singing.
Shhhh, there it is again. It is coming from the trees.

February Ramblings©

Procrastination©
Remember, February is the month,
you said this past July,
would be the month you’d get done, those chores you put off,
surely you didn’t lie.

Valentine©
Roses are red, Violets are blue,
or so it says in rhyme, for someone you hold dear.
Once a year, is not enough to say,
what should be said all the time, repeated throughout the year.

Dead Presidents©
Celebrated this month, a special day,
all Presidents honored, with words so bright & sunny.
But for us, my friends, the ones of importance,
have their pictures on our money.

Winter Wears On©
The New Year is now nearly two month’s gone
and Winter’s wearing heavily on my mind.
I look for relief and solace, anywhere I can.
Only one more month, until Daylight Saving time.

The Fireplace©

I loved our fireplace at home in NW PA in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’ while growing up there; the cheery fire, my Mom playing piano, my grandfather playing his fiddle and harmonica, singing old carols, folk tunes and enjoying one another’s company, but I am reminded also of the labor required to fuel and clean and the cold draft when not burning, and; well, the other side of things of joy, the balance in our experience and lives.
