cold in the corner, the boxes are wet
need to get dry, need to feed his pet
truth i call him, this friend of mine
only friend i have and it`s about time

safe through my dreams when its not right
this dog of mine i hold so tight
four legged friend has soul and heart
cold and tired we shall never part

christmas is on us and carols you sing
rejoice and smiles and happiness you bring
but its cold again and truths by my side
flash backs in him my dreams he hides

deep in the trenches he see`s my pain
the flash the bang but who`s gain
hunger and thirst the fear inside
its nearly christmas that day i cried

the silence that fell on that great day
not even a whisper on my knee`s i pray
then came the song of silent night
in german and english it just seemed right

football they played on that special day
for the next was not it took lives away
but truth is here ready for my dreams
loving and caring best friend it seems

so enjoy your christamas but never forget
the box he lived in was not for a bet
truth got lonely without his best friend
stayed trueful and faithful right till the end

Shaun won a litterary award for this poem. It is a historical piece. Can anyone remember who this poem is about and in which battle it took place?

I find it quite a fascinating story.
