On 8 June 1967, while in International waters, the USS Liberty was attacked by one of our allies and engaged in a two and a half hour battle, during which Marine and Navy F-4 Phantoms were ordered back to their carriers by the President. Finally when the attackers broke off, the Russian Navy came along side and escorted the damaged Liberty to Port.

During this attack 34 men died and 173 more were wounded.

...Click the USS Liberty icon set above the list of names--Statements of American officials tell the ugly story: A despicable and deliberate Israeli attack against the nearly helpless ship; and the craven decision by President Lyndon Johnson, who ordered Navy warplanes not to counterattack and defend the Liberty...
...One of the sorriest (and most cowardly) episodes in our modern military history...
...Semper Fi to the valiant crew of the USS Liberty, the dead and the survivors. Utter loathing disgust for the scum who attacked her, and for those slimes in Washington who turned their backs on her as she was being destroyed...
