The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Lance Cpl. James B. Stack, 20, of Arlington Heights, Ill., died Nov. 10 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province,
Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Lance Cpl. James Bray Stack of Arlington Heights --- Lance Cpl. James Bray Stack was born July 11, 1990, to Robert Bruce and Linda Lorraine (nee Bray) Stack in Schaumburg. On July 12, 2009, he married Katie Stack and on Nov. 3, 2009, James became the proud father of his daughter, Mikayla Lorraine. Lance Cpl. Stack was killed by hostile small arms fire while conducting dismounted combat operations on Nov. 10, 2010, in the Sangin District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Lance Cpl. Stack was a rifleman (0311) assigned to India Company (2nd Platoon) of the Darkhorse 3/5 Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Pendleton, Calif. His awards for personal service include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Lance Cpl. Stack was a nationally ranked competitive shooter and 2008 Junior Olympics Gold Medalist for Air Pistol. In addition to his wife and daughter, James is survived by his parents, Robert and Linda Stack; sister, Megan Lorraine Stack; grandparents, Jo Ann Stack and Gene Bray; his mother-in-law, Dawn (Tom) Hedrick; sister-in-law, Joanne Savage; Katie's grandmother, Eleanor Savage; and his father-in-law Michael Landeweer. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lorraine Bray and his grandfather, Robert Lee Stack. Visitation is from 2 until 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Prospect High School, 801 W. Kensington Road, Mount Prospect, IL 60056. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family requests kindly omit flowers.
