GILBERT — Funeral service for Walter Arlie Dodge, 81, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at First Calvary Baptist Church with full military honors. Entombment will be held following the service in Woodridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Mr. Dodge will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201 or to First Calvary Baptist Church Food Pantry, 2320 Cedar Grove Road, Leesville, SC 29070.
Mr. Dodge was born November 8, 1927, in Boynton, OK, and passed away Sunday, October 4, 2009. He was a son of the late John Lee Dodge and Willie Etta Scott Dodge. He was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Dodge had retired from the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II and Korea, in which he was the recipient of 2 Purple Hearts, and Vietnam. He also served in the Dominican Republic. Mr. Dodge also retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons where he was a correctional officer.
Mr. Dodge is survived by his wife, Phyllis Dodge of Gilbert, SC; 11 children, Johnny Lee Dodge of Gilbert, SC, Dennis Lee Dodge of Irmo, SC, Patti Lee Roach of Pittsburg, PA, Kathy Dodge of Gilbert, SC, Vickie Lynn Abbate of Martinsburg, WV, Timothy Lee Dodge of West Columbia, SC, Gregory Allen Kennedy of Reed Springs, MO, Michael Loren Kennedy of Chester, VA, Sandra Denise Powell, Jenni Lee Dodge and Walter Zachary Kennedy, all of Gilbert, SC; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, John R. Dodge.
