Max Elijah Chapoose, age 88, of Roosevelt, died June 13, 2009, at the Sr. Villa in Roosevelt.
He was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Ft. Duchesne, to Lester and Lillie Reed Chapoose. He married Elaine Forakis, June 10, 1959, in Duchesne; Elaine died Jan. 8, 2003.
Max grew up on the reservation and was raised by his step-dad, Chalmers Wash. He attended schools at the Whiterocks Boarding School and graduated from Sherman Indian School in Riverside, Calif. He was around horses and livestock growing up and became a Professional Rodeo Cowboy. In 1955 he was the World Champion Saddle Bronc rider, an event that was held in New York City at Madison Square Garden. He also competed in other famous venues such as the San Francisco Cow Palace, Calgary Stampede and Chicago Amphitheater.
Max was in the US Marines during World War II, serving in the South Pacific as a scout and sniper. He loved the military even though he was wounded and contracted Malaria.
He served on the Ute Tribal Council in the 1960s. He worked many years in different aspects of the Oil Field and was also a businessman–developing water disposal pits. For recreation he was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by children, Ruth (Roy C.) Hatch, Magna; John (Brenda) Osborne, West Valley, Michael (Yolanda) Osborne, Tooele; Steven (Jane) Osborne, Douglas, Wyo.; and Maxie C. Chapoose, Fort Duchesne; 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Julian Reed, Indian Bench.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Kristopher Scott Osborne, brother, Tom Chapoose and sister, Twila.
Funeral services will held Tuesday, June 16 at 11 a.m. at the Roosevelt LDS First Ward Chapel, 10 South State Street. A viewing will be held Tuesday at the church from 10-10:45 a.m.
Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park with military honors by the American Legion. Condolences may be sent and viewed at www.hullingermortuary.com
