Lillian Sandy Mittelsdorf, 85, of Lanoka Harbor passed away at home on Saturday, June 6, 2009. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Friday, June 19, 2009, from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:50 a.m. at the Riggs Funeral Home, 130 Route 9 North, Forked River, N.J. Interment shall follow at the BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, at 1:30 pm. Mrs. Mittelsdorf was born in Muncie, Kan., and lived in Montclair for 20 years prior to moving to Lanoka Harbor in 1984. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve. Prior to World War II, she worked for the FBI. Mrs. Mittelsdorf was last employed as an executive secretary for Sampson-Neil & Wilkins of Upper Montclair, retiring in 1983. She was a Girl Scout leader for Troop 256, choir member of the Forked River Presbyterian Church, past president of Essex County Bee Keepers and literacy volunteer teacher. She was predeceased by her son, Thomas in 2005, daughter, Sandra Bamber in 2007, and grandson, Ian Mittelsdorf in 2009. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Joseph; daughters, Chris Dry of Gulfport, Miss., and Carol Lee Mittelsdorf of New York City, and son, Michael of New York City. Also surviving are two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, donations to VETWORK, 103 N. Main St., Forked River, N.J. 08731 may be made in Mrs. Mittelsdorf's memory.
