Rose Ellen (Woodcock) Gastman was born October 31, 1921 to Percy and Elizabeth (Fielder) Woodcock in Fortuna, California. She passed away June 6, 2009 after a long battle with emphysema. She was a life long resident of Humboldt County raised in Ferndale before moving to Eureka. She graduated from Eureka High in 1939.

Rose lived and worked in San Francisco for a short while before enlisting in the Marine Corps during World War II. She was stationed in Washington D.C. at Marine Headquarters.

At the end of the war, she was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Upon her return to Humboldt County, she married (Wilson) Joy Gastman with whom she raised three children. Rose retired from the Humboldt County Auditor’s office. During their retirement, she and Joy enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending summers at their summer home in Willow Creek with family and friends.

She also enjoyed spending time with her grand children and great grand children who brought her much joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joy, her parents, brother Bill Woodcock, killed during World War II and her brother and sister in law Dick and Mary Woodcock.

Rose is survived by her children, Shari Rutledge (Dave) Redding, CA, Bill Gastman, Eureka, Michele Davis Eureka, her grandchildren, Josh Davis, Sarah Davis, Shelby Rutledge and great grandchildren, Anya Mariante and Taylor Almand,, niece Monica Blake (Mike), nephew Bill Woodcock (Monique).

We would like to thank the Hospice workers who made her feel so comfortable at the end, Maureen, Marianne and Velocity, also Wanetta Corela who took wonderful care of her during the last year and a half making it possible for her to remain in her home until her death.

A celebration of her life will be held in August. Rose’s last wishes were to be interned at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.. In lieu of flowers she requested that donations be made to Hospice of Humboldt County.
