William T. (Bill) Likly, 76, of Cape Coral, passed away yesterday, 5/29/2009, after a courageous battle following an injury. He and his brother "Rusty" were born in Rochester, NY, to Dorothy Townsend and Henry Kenneth Likly. After high school, Bill earned his business degree from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and then went on to join the United States Marine Corps as a test pilot where he experienced the thrill of supersonic flight and ended his commission as a reservist with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After the Marine Corps, Bill started a career in the insurance business in Rochester, NY. Bill married his wife Shirley in 1959, and settled in Fairport, NY, where they raised their two boys, Andrew and Bruce. Bill retired from the insurance business, at the age of 55, after selling his portion of Hatch Leonard Markin Shaw in 1987. Upon retirement Bill and Shirley moved to Cape Coral where they have lived for the past 22 years. During Bill's years in Rochester he was a member of the Fairport Volunteer Fire Department, was a Town Councilman for the Town of Perinton, was head of the Rochester Republican Committee and member of the Genesee Valley Club. During his retirement which he split between Winters in Cape Coral and Summers in Dorset Ontario Canada, Bill enjoyed boating with the Royal Palm Yacht Club and spending time with his friends on the Lake of Bays in Canada and in Cape Coral. Bill never stepped away from a challenging situation, never let down a friend in need and never let a bad situation linger. He is survived by his brother, his wife, his two sons and daughters-in-law, his three granddaughters and many many many close friends. Bill will forever be thought of as a wonderful husband, fantastic father, great-grandfather and dear friend. In our hearts he has always been and will always be FORTHRIGHT, UPRIGHT AND OUT-OF-JAIL.
