HAROLD L. BONAR, formerly of Mayfield Hts., OH., died Sunday, May 24, 2009 in Peoria, AZ., two days short of his 90th birthday. He died after a six-year battle with cancer and heart disease. Harold was born May 26, 1919 in Wheeling, WV., to Ethel (nee McMullen) and Harold D. Bonar. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Medic assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Virginia, Hawaii and overseas in Iwo Jima. He saved many lives and received commendations for his bravery including the Silver Star and a Purple Heart. Harold and his wife Beatrice (nee Baker) met when both were in the service and stationed in Quantico, VA. They lived first in Cleveland and then in Mayfield Hts. from 1950 to 1982, when they retired. Harold worked more than 30 years with Eagle Foods which later became American Seaway Foods, in Cleveland. Bea died in Sun City West, AZ., in 1989. Harold is survived by daughter, Leslie Fountain Mason (Bill Mason) of Peoria, AZ.; sons Douglas Bonar (Deborah) of Pinellas Park, FL., and Scott Bonar (Stacey) of Chandler, AZ. All three children graduated from Mayfield High School. He is also survived by grandchildren, Erin, Zachary, Amanda, Samantha, Jeremy, Carly and Jake Bonar. A memorial service is at SUNLAND MORTUARY, 15826 DEL WEBB BLVD., SUN CITY, AZ., on Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m. Harold's ashes will be buried beside Bea's in the Garden of Valor.
