BEFORE YOU KILL YOURSELF
You've decided to do it. Life is impossible. You just can't do this anymore. You can't face these issues anymore.
Fine...but before you kill yourself, there are some important things you should know. I am a Psychiatric Nurse. I see the results of suicide --when it works and more often, when it does not. Consider these facts before you act. Please!
Suicide is usually NOT successfull. You think you know a way to guaratee it? Ask the 25 yr. old who tried to electrocute himself. He lived but both his arms are gone.
What about jumping? Ask John. He used to be intelligent with an engaging sense of humor. That was before his leap from a building. Now he is brain-damaged and will always need care. He staggers, has seizures and lives in a fog where he seldom sees what is around him. Sometimes he is blind for days. But worst of all, he KNOWS he used to be normal and what he did. He cries daily from the restraints he must wear in his hospital bed so he doesn't injure himself.
What about pills. Ask the 32 yr. old with extensive liver damage from an overdose. He was saved by a neighbor who called 911. Now he is dieing a slow death that may take 9 months or more. Have you ever seen someone die from liver damage. You turn a grayblack shade of yellow. It isn't easy, pleasant or quick. It is a hard way to go.
What about a gun? Ask the 58 yr. old who shot himself in the head doing a massive lobotomy on himself. He has little idea of his surroundings and has to be constantly supervised to feed himself and can't go to the toilet without help. Ask the 24 year old who shot himself in the head, the bullet deflecting off a bone in his skull and doing damage but not killing him. Now he is blind on one side, drags one leg, has one arm useless and hanging and cannot hear anything. He lived through his foolproof suicide...you might too!
Who will clean your blood off the carpet or scrape your brains from the ceiling? Who will clean the gore from inside your car?
What if you aim your car at another vehicle or a tree. You might survive that too. Many do! Who will comfort the child and the baby whose mommy or daddy you might kill. Who will clean up the results? Commercial cleaning crews often reject those jobs. But someone has to doit. Your daughter? Your mother? Someone.
Who will cut you down from where you hanged yourself or identify your bloated body after you drowned? Your son? Your mother? Your wife?
The carefully worded suicide note is no help.No matter how you try to convey love and not blame them, those who loved you will never recover. Never completely! They will feel guilt, regret and an unending pain the rest of there lives.
Suicide is contageous. Look around at your family. Look at the 4 yr. old play on the rug. Kill yourself tonight and he may do it too, ten yrs. from now.
You do have other choices. There are people who can help. Call a hot - line. Call a friend. Call a Veteran buddy. Call a minister or a priest. Call the police. Call on GOD.
They will tell you there is hope. Maybe you will find it in the mail tomorrow. Or in a phone call this weekend. But whatever it is you are seeking could be just a minute, a day or only a month away.
You say you don't want to be stopped? Still want to do it? Well, the, I may see you in the psychiatric ward later. We'll work with whatever you have left.
