OMAHA, Neb. - John T. "Jack," Mazzie, 84, passed away Monday, Dec. 29, at home in Omaha, after a courageous battle with cancer. Sergeant, USMC, Pacific Theater World War II; he got a BA from Creighton University in 1950. Jack enjoyed a very successful broadcasting career spanning 45 years, beginning in 1947, with experimental television at Creighton with Roswell Williams SJ. He was on the original staff of WOW-TV in Omaha, leaving as executive producer. Other positions include VP/GM, WREX-TV in Rockford, Ill.; president and CEO of Gilmore Enterprises in Kalamazoo, Mich.; VP/GM, WEEK-TV in Peoria, Ill.; GM, WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids, Mich.; retired in 1992, returning to his birthplace of Omaha. Community and industry activities include United Way of Rockford, Ill.-president; Rockford Area Chamber of Commerce-VP; Rockford Symphony Orchestra Board-VP; Illinois Broadcasters Association-president; member, Michigan Broadcasters Association and National Association of Broadcasters; St. Anthony Hospital Rockford Board of Directors; Plaza Arts Circle (Western Michigan University) Board of Directors; Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors; Downtown Kalamazoo Economic Development board of trustees; St. Jude Affiliate Board of Directors (Peoria); Community Relations Committee, Bradley University (Peoria); volunteered with Radio Talking Books and SCORE (Omaha). Survived by his loving family, Donna Mazzie, best friend and wife of 55 years; son, Mark Mazzie (Kathy); daughter, Marin Danieley (Jason), all of New York City; fur person, Chappie; and many relatives and good friends. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, in West Center Chapel, Omaha. In lieu of flowers, memorials to one of the following: Creighton University; Marin Mazzie Scholarship Fund; Shaw Theatre; Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI 49007; or charity of your choice.
