John D. Corken passed away on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, under the care of Hospice in St. Augustine. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1951, and served with the 12th Marines 3rd Division as a corpsman during the Korean War. He married Leah A. Carron of Rock Island, IL in 1953. He returned from the service and attended Marquette University and graduated in 1960. Mr. Corken's career was with the International Division of Sherwood medical Industries, so as a family, they lived in Mexico, Brazil and England. His children graduated from the American School of Brazil and the American School of London. After an entire life of international travel, he and his wife took early retirement and moved to St. Augustine. After some interim moves, they settled in Sun City Center, where they could be close to their children and family. After John retired, he stayed active. He was President of the Marine Corps League in St. Augustine. He managed the scoreboard for College basketball, rated golf courses for Florida PGA and wan an active member of St. Anne's Parish in Ruskin. He also served on two Board of Directors, he was a member of Renaissance Country Club, and played with his beloved Eagles. He is survived by his wife Leah, of 55 years; his daughter and son-in-law Lisa (Hard Cheeks) and Jim Cullen of Naple;, his son Matthew (Matoe) and daughter-in-law Alene of Medina, MN; his daughter Mary Jo (Jo Jo) Jennings and son-in-law Dr. Dee Jennings of Dallas, TX; his grandchildren, Lauren Cullen, James Cullen and Sean Cullen of Naples, Catie Corken, Emily Corken and Mandy Corken of Medina, MN. Funeral Mass will be at St. Anne Catholic Church in Ruskin, 11 am, Wednesday, Jan. 14th, 2009. Inurnment will be in Sarasota, in the Veteran's Cemetery.
