Madeline Elizabeth Broshot 1918 - 2009

Madeline was born July 7, 1918, in a log cabin in Cordova, Alaska. She graduated from Fort Vancouver High School in 1937 and received her bachelor's degree in English from Willamette University in 1942.

During World War II Madeline served in the Marine Corps as a staff sergeant. While serving at Camp Pendleton, she met and fell in love with another Marine Corps sergeant, Arthur Broshot. They were married in Racine, Wisc., in 1947 and had two children, James and Nancy. Madeline stayed home to raise her children until 1958. From 1958 to 1963 Madeline taught fourth and fifth grades in Midlothian, Ill. From 1963 to 1968 she taught grades five through nine in a two-room schoolhouse near Rolla, Mo. Following her teaching career, Madeline was a social worker in Missouri and Oregon after she moved there in 1970. She retired in 1977 to care for Arthur who suffered from multiple sclerosis, and she and Arthur had a house built in Gresham in 1978. After Arthur died in 1989, Madeline moved to Oregon City.

Madeline was a gifted oil and watercolor artist, avid gardener, and postcard collector. She was active in the Women Marines and Disabled American Veterans. For the past four years, Madeline resided at Monterey Court Alzheimer's Facility.

Madeline passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, 2009 of old age. She is survived by her children, James Broshot of St. James, Mo., and Nancy Broshot of Oregon City; two grandchildren, Christine Hamilton-Bassler and Benjamin Broshot; and a great-grandson, Austen Bassler.
