Senior Cpl. Norman Smith, 46, died Tuesday while on duty as a Dallas Police Department gang unit officer.
Chief David Kunkle and fellow gang unit members eulogized Senior Cpl. Smith, a former Marine, as a gentle giant who was as comfortable in an antique shop as he was on the street, chasing criminals.
Chief Kunkle called Senior Cpl. Smith a hard-charging warrior who also approached people with respect, grace and dignity.
Officers from virtually every law enforcement agency in North Texas joined Dallas police at the funeral, including Fort Worth, Tarrant County, D/FW Airport, Dallas Independent School District, Mansfield, North Richland Hills, Keller, Bedford and Grapevine, to name a few.
Some came from as far away as San Antonio, Austin, Longview and College Station.
A group of Marines in dress blue uniforms attended, as well as a group of high school students.
